    Another canadian innovation

Standard Time: Up until about 100 years ago there were no time zones around the world. Most communities figured it was noon when the sun was overhead, so it was very confusing, time varied from town to town. So, on February 8, 1879, a Canadian named Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915, knighted in 1897), was lecturing at the Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Scientific Knowledge in Toronto when he first made public his suggestion that the world should be divided into 24 equal time zones, with a standard time in each zone.

On November 18, 1883 all North American railway companies adopted his idea; in 1884 at a conference in Washington, D.C., 25 countries adopted his proposition. On January 1, 1885 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was established as the meridian of the system (England is "0" hour - where all the time zones start.) and over the next several years countries around the world adopted the system.

Canada occupies 7 of the 24 zones, the continential US has 4 time zones. Only one country in the world has more time zones than Canada - that's the Soviet Union. They have nine.

    Another canadian first

First Commercial Jet Transport: The first continental jet transport to fly in the Western Hemisphere was designed in Canada by an Englishman named James Floyd. It was built in Toronto. It was first flown on August 10, 1949 over the airport in Toronto. It was the first flight of a jet transport in North America, and the second in the world by only 2 weeks.

In a record-breaking 75 minute flight from Toronto to New York on April 18, 1950 the jet liner carried the first airmail ever carried by a jet-powered aircraft and made the first international flight (jet-transport) in North America. In recognition, Floyd was awarded the "Wright Metal" for the jet liner. He was the first person who was not a U.S. citizen ever to win one.

Awww Venice!!! That isn't very nice. How would you feel if I said that about you. "They're not real" {{evil smirk))

Canada is the balance between British elitism (stoic stiff upper lip and all that) and American arrogance (we're the #@$&^ best everything in the world).

Balance is always better than the two extremes! ...

My name is Kismet ...and ...I ...AM ... Canadian!!!
