Thank you so much everybody. Just got in from work etc and I'm so tired.

I checked with ATT and they are not offering the Call Vantage anymore.

I looked up Magic Jack and it is intriguing. Just don't understand how it works. Do I plug it into my laptop whenever I want to make a long distance call? Then keep the land line at a minimal charge? Ai yiyi. Didn't have enough time to figure it all out and will have more questions.

Thanks again everyone. I may shamelessly BTTT while I'm trying to figure this out. It's nice to have you all here.

AT lunch the consensus was a hate for the cable company in my area. There goes that idea.

Magic jack works through your computer. It's all we use now because it has caller ID capability, call forwarding which can be used anywhere in the USA or Canada, and you take it with you to use anywhere. I was a real skeptic but I won't change now that I've got it.

You need high speed internet service to use it but it's just an all in one jack that you plug into your usb port. There are no long distance charges when you use it so when I talk to my sister for 2 hours at a time, there are no phone charges. Go to magicjack.com - I think that's the website and check it out. Most cost efficient way to go especially if you make long distance calls or don't need a land line. sammieswife.

I have the bundle with my cable company. Basic cable (first 72 channels), Road Runner deluxe, and digital phone for $99/mo. If the power goes out, you lose phone service. When Hurricane Ike came through, I lost everthing. Phone was out for days, as was internet. I felt so disconnected!

Without the bundle, basic cable and RoadRunner are almost $100, so it's kinda like my digital phone is free.

Right now we have one cell phone. I think in the future, we'll have two cell phones and do away with the LAN line altogether.

I know folks who have had Vonage.

Everyone says: 'your internet/computer' has problems.

    GRR!

I find the volume on Vonage, low.

When I call someone with Vonage, it's like the volume is so low....shhhh!

    WTF?! or dropped calls, constantly.

My cousin in North Carolina has it, and I've told her it's lame.

I still have BELL Canada. But it's super basic.

I had SKYPE, but it drove me mad, as I hate just being plunked down here while someone looks at me, looking at them while I'd rather be looking at porn; which can be problematic.

    I'm sure you understand.

Finally-Free, sounds like you have Internet connection problems.

No problem with my internet connection. I haven't experienced any connectivity or bandwidth problems in the 5 years I've used Rogers as my ISP. I can't recall a single outage. I often manage servers at my workplace from home, and can't afford a poor connection. I've always hated Rogers with a passion, but I have to give credit where it's due. The only reason I stay with them is because the other local offerings just aren't as reliable.

I call long distance everyday to Kentucky, sometimes I call 4 times a day, I talk as long as I want.

    I love Vonage.

Maybe Rogers is screwing with VOIP.

I've read the specs on Magic Jack and still have this question. Suppose we're on the road -- like we are now. We live in Arkansas but have spent the night in Ottawa, On; Moncton, NB; Portland, Me, Boston, Mass. -- you get the idea. Could we use Magic Jack on my laptop as long as we have fast connection? Most motels, like the one we're mostly in, have such speed.

Do we simply take a land phone with us on the road? Cell phone work with this?
