my family is in a nascent period of adapting to our child's
revelation that he is an FTM transgendered person.....
above all else he is still just a person.....
it is a scary reality that the majority of the world
will hate him without cause, without even knowing him
simply because of ignorance

It does, and you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Society does a terrible job of accepting folks for who they are or who they want to be, and you made the key point, he is still a person regardless, and for that reason alone, is due the respect and love that everyone else is.

I long for the day when they will all be accepted no matter what or who they are. Because they are people, they should be accepted.

All we can do is fight the ignorance when we find it.
I have a loved one who is trans but for health reasons cannot make the change from male to female. It is very difficult for him, he is married to a wonderful girl who says she will stay with him even if he makes the change because she loves him for who he is, not whether he is male or female.He is very lucky to have some friends and family who care, so many of these beautiful souls don't have anyone to turn to for understanding.
Sending much positivity to your family and to your son in particular.

FTM is a designation to describe a person who is considered a Female to Male transgendered person
MTF is male to female
current science is supporting the theory that in fetal development the brains of transgendered people
receive a different hormonal cue than their bodies, hence they are born with a biological identity that
does not correlate with their mental identity..... they are trapped in a body that does not fit their mental
construct of who they are
gender issues differ radically from orientation
