I don't know this person, but I'm guessing that he "knows" full well that this is his out. By publicly apologizing like that he gives the Society an out (him) and then get's out himself.
I think that he's seen too much, knows too much and figured that he'd clear his concenience, be the scapegoat, and get out all at the same time. I think that he's still covering for the organization because he still believes, but he just can't be a part of it anymore.

Mr. Aulicino is what is known as a "closet liberal" in my opinion. Knowing him personally...he talks one way when he's outside of Bethel and talks another (probably) when he's "in residence". I think he and his wife are "lifers" at Bethel. I sincerely doubt that he would do anything to endanger his "retirement" as an active Bethelite.
