Why don't you people rail against some of the real tax guzzlers? Corporate bail outs, Haliburton and the like, and the Bush war machine??

your 100% correct there. helping them is the same as people asking the government to support them and their kids.

Maybe that's the difference between us BD. My own personal situation is quite good. That doesn't preclude me from trying to figure out how to make it better for others. Doesn't make me fear those who are struggling.

Lady, YOU NEED to get out more. I've seen it and lived around it. I've owned three businesses in my adult life, and

I know from what I speak. I worked a full time job and a part time job while going to college. I know what it's like to

have to push yourself to get there. I've actually had people tell me that they can make more on milking the welfare system

than working. You must actually have your head in the sand if you think there is not huge abuses of

our welfare system and a huge percentage of just plain lazy good for nothing bums out there. As I said

before, we should take care of the truly needy and our social programs should be plentiful and efficient, but we

should never become a society with a soup kitchen mentality.

Move to France...if you're eligable. Full time 35 hours a week. 5 weeks paid vacation. College/University free. Same with health care.

That's if you can get hired over there. IIRC their unemployment rate is 8%. That is actually pretty good for them historically.

Sarkozy is working at reforming the economy and part of that is a 40 hour workweek.

making it better for others does not mean forcing a corporation to pay them higher wages. if people would better themselves wal-mart would have fewer workers and would have to raise their payscale to stay in business. but, to do this means sacrifice and hard work. it's easier for people to blame the system. i refuse to accept the idea of forcing someone to pay you more. i was told from a very early age i would never amount to much. i worked my ass off to get where i am and still bust my hump to make my life better. i don't expect anyone to help me.

Thanks, DantheMan for posting these comments from the UFCW website...

"The world’s largest and richest retailer—with more than $250 billion in annual revenue--can afford wage increases."

Typical socialist rhetoric... actually, that probably doesn't give socialists enough credit. Hey, geniuses, the point of business is not to figure out the maximum "we can afford" to spend. The point is to maximize profit. Take a beginning economics class. No wonder the average consumer debt is measured in thousands of dollars. People think in terms of 'what can I afford,' and they assume businesses are thinking the same way. Unlike you, businesses actually tend to consider what in their best interests. If you did the same, perhaps your life wouldn't be so crappy. But that's probably too much to ask, what with your busy schedule of asking rich people to adopt you and all.

"Wal-Mart could pay each employee a dollar more per hour if the company increased its prices by a half-penny per dollar. For example, a $2.00 pair of socks would then cost $2.01. This minimal increase would annually add up to $1,800 for each employee."

Again, a beginning economics class would be of great help here. The assumption that a price increase will cause revenue to rise while leaving sales volume miraculously unaffected is, frankly, idiotic.

It is a testament to our technological development as a society that even persons of such simian intelligence can successfully operate a website to disseminate their infantile views to the world at large.

See? Turned it into a positive there at the end. ;-) Didn't want y'all to think I'm too grumpy.

How do you guys feel about the right that was given by the courts, to corps to have all the rights and protections that an individual has? Before that, corporations had a lot more constraints, and individuals had more rights.

::The point is to maximize profit.

That is not always true and many good profitable companies make the choice to eschew max profits give health care and decent wages, often small companies in small communities.

In the US is the minimum wage set according to age? Here in Oz, the minimum wage is $13.47 per hour.

Wow! That's amazing! That's a liveable wage for a whole lot of people!

The minimu wage in the USA is $5.85 per hour. Each State can set their own rate higher than that if they choose - for example in California it is $8.00 per hour whereas in Idaho it is set at $5.85 per hour. That rate is set basically for the adult working wage. To put it in real terms though lets use California. A modest rent, heat, electric, water, trash and telephone cost for one month might be $1300.00. It is expensive to live in California. If you work at the state minimum wage, your monthly net pay will not pay for your living costs and if you add on a few dollars more per hour and then deduct taxes, you might break even. Now - you do want to eat, you will need to buy toilet paper, toothpaste and all that good stuff, most likely you will need a car if you live in a more rural area where rents are cheaper, insurance for the car and you will need to wear clothes. You have a few choices - make sure your spouse has a job that pays at least the minimum wage; put your kids if you hvave them, out to work to contribute to the household or take your vitamins and get a second job. Depending on your age, finances and other circumstances, you may opt to go back to school in the hopes that you can get a better paying job but that might not be one of the more realistic options available to you. Whatever you do though - do not under any circumstances get sick because if you have a combined income in the family, if both of you are making the minimum wage, it will likely push you too high up the income ladder and disqualify you for any help with the medical bills.

Of course some States have lower cost of living expenses and the rate they set might be adequate for that State.

Oh - and all those people at Walmart weren't looking for handouts - they were looking for jobs! People lining up for 3 hours to apply for a job are people looking for work - not welfare. Kudo's to all of them!

Journey on, this is my basic issue with you. How do you make the leap from people working hard and making a decent wage, to lazy bums and a soup kitchen mentality???
