(This is an e-mail making the rounds of jdubs email lists. My apologies for not having eye and mind bleach available for the after effects)

    NEW WORLD TRANSLATION
    vs
    Holy Bible

A Circuit Overseer visiting a Congregation raised this issue in one of
his talks. He asked them, "why do we use the title ' New World
Translation of the Holy Scriptures' on the cover of our bibles instead
of 'Holy Bible' like most religions use?"

The answer is truly amazing (see below). It really lets you see how
the organization makes sure that every detail of our worship is
    pleasing to Jehovah. Amazing!!!

    ************************************************************************
    The reason is….

The word "bible" is not found in the scriptures. The word "Bible" is
from the Greek—"Biblia" meaning books. The term began to be applied to
the whole collection of sacred books in the 5th Century.

The translation committee wanted to use a term that is actually found
within the pages of these writings. Thus, when we read in the Bible
about any references to holy writings, whether Hebrew or Greek, they
are usually referred to as scriptures, therefore, the New World
    Translation of the Holy Scriptures.

When you think about the translation committee and how important it
was for them to have an accurate translation, even down to the title,
it garners even greater respect for these men and the work they did.
And of course the fact that they had the backing of the greatest
personage in the universe… they couldn't go wrong.

Do you think that CO really believes the Watchtower propaganda?

"And of course the fact that they had the backing of the greatest
personage in the universe… they couldn't go wrong."

And yet, they released the first edition of the NWT in the 1950s, and released another edition, WITH CHANGES, in 1984. Must have gone wrong!

Hahahahaha....what a giant load of crap. It's not like they are the only or first ones to decide to do this.

I'm sure that Jehovah is really pleased that the witnesses are so picky. Actually, as long as we are being picky, it should be pointed out that the word scriptures was sometimes used for just the Hebrew scriptures or sometimes used for "holy writings" that didn't make it into the canon. It seems to be a pretty vague and misleading term in this context, whereas the term Bible clearly refers to a specific collection of books.

And yet they have no problem refering to it as the 'Bible' everywhere else.

Amazing !! That message just cured my constipation !! Now I have to go change my drawers...

Perhaps on the next 'bOrg bible' revision, instead of using the biblical phrase "New World", they might use this verse:

(John 11:35) Jesus gave way to tears.

Ah, yes, I can hear the next cornvention: [insert echos] "Brothers, the Faithful and Discreet Slave is pleased to announce to all you conventioners the release of the new "Jesus Gave Way to Tears Translation" [cue applause].

I actually could buy that a 1940's Freddie and Bert decided that the term "Bible" was a Babylonish, false religious concoction. Then Nathan Knorr probably told them that they were crazy to try and push that issue- he'd let them decide on the words on the cover- but no Questions From Readers telling everyone that Bible was a bad word.
