How much past 2014 can these people continue ?

Lets hope that the younger , net savvy generation will be up to seeing through the smoke and mirrors of the Borg. Sadly, the older ones that I get to talk to are just too set in their ways, too proud to admit that they were wrong, too scared to consider the thought that their lives have been wasted . Just like the ones they meet on doosteps they "Have their religion and they are sticking to it"

In terms of dates, I think back to the 1975 debacle. As Autumn of that year was passing, we realised that this year was not seeing the end. "So it will be soon after" we thought. As a couple of years passed it seemed a badge of integrity if we kept going " Only fair weather Witnesses would worry about it " we thought . So we settled down again for the duration ....

Personally, I think that the 1914 date will have to be changed in near future. But they will do, without a conscience . If facts do not fit , then they just change it , as they have with the 1935 date . They will continue, as long as the money and support lasts..

....or maybe the JW organization, although flawed, facilitates the survival of millions of people through the worst social upheaval in the history of humankind.

    proplog2 - That needs explaining!

The world has also survived terrible and unimaginable social upheaval in the past tens of thousands of years and people still survived even without the existence of the WTBTS!

The WTS never helped a single soul--- let alone millions of them.

I see a quiet desperation in my friends. They look at me with a mixture of envy and fear: they envy my freedom, and they fear that they will never have anything like it. They're

trapped. Old age looms. Deliberate childlessness looms. The only they see is the end to their youth and their dreams and their lives. Yes. I pity them.... but they reject

    the open door to freedom.

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed Terry's illustration too. Gets a G from me.

My aunt is nearing her 80s and she has been a JW since the '50s. She went through the whole '75 debacle, even promoted it. She saw the whole "generation" teaching deflate. She has seen it all. And yet, she still says that Armgeddon is so close you can almost taste it. I suspect that if she lives to 2014, she will still feel the same way.

Gill- Good post my friend ! I hope my witness family sees the deception before they waste their entire lives on a false dream ! I have 2 daughters I would love to see occasionally and hopefully future grandchildren, who I definitely don't want raised in this mind control cult ! That being said, I think NVR was correct in saying that a lot of these witnesses can't face the fact if this is the wrong way and they were decieved , then they just wasted their entire lives on the false deception ! Peace out, Mr. Flipper

The WTS certainly have the dubbies in a spot...'its sooooo close....but we're not serving for a date'

1st class ability to hold two conflicting thoughts at once.

Besty - There is nothing that the WTBTS prints that cannot have multiple meanings! That's what is why their genius with the ambiguous phrases verge on evil and they maintain their power for deception.

Doesn't matter what they print, if you took it into a court room they could make it say anything they wanted it to appear to say. And yet their followers and 'real believers' would understand what they 'really' meant!

There's an expression in finance about throwing good money after bad. Even though you realize that what you've poured your money into may not pan out, you continue to put more money there, because to do otherwise is to face the fact that the money already gone, is really gone. That's too painful. So you create the fantasy for yourself that feels more comfortable.

Picture the old lady sitting at the slot machine, pumping in coins. Don't even think about using her machine! That's her money in there. She keeps pumping more money in, because she is absolutely confident it will eventually pay off. She can't give up! She pictures the average witness. The money she's pumped in represents the years she's already spent in the org. That's her investment. The money left in her bucket to pump in represents the years of life she has left. She's been told that the casino is closing at midnight, which is only one hour away, which only makes her more desperate to get that pay-off as she furiously pumps more coins in. But the owner of the casino keeps moving the minute hand on the clock back a few minutes, so it never hits midnight. If she thinks it's ten minutes to midnight and her payoff is imminent, what would you be able to say to her to get her to walk away from the machine right now? You will not be able to drag her away with a 20-mule team.

The battle between cognitive dissonance and the shame of being the victim of a con is never-ending for the dub. There is no more fear-filled thought for them than the thought that the WT lied to them. It would mean their whole life has been a lie. Rather than face even the possibility of that thought being true, they hunker down and continue to submit. It's the easier course. Religion is the opium of the people. And the Watchtower's got some really good stuff.
