I'm sorry this happened to you Dinah- it must be more heartbreaking if it happens to your child.
I have several cousins and a niece that are mixed race in my family and I've seen firsthand how cruel some people are. It makes it worse that most of them live in areas where racism is an everyday fact of life and sometimes even within their own family.

I read through some of the replies, and noticed people talking about "Mulatto" children. Isn't this term a holdover from slave owning days, much like the term "Octaroon" for someone that is 1/8th black? I always thought of those words as politically incorrect.
Anyway, I am sorry that your daughter had to endure dealing with these idiots.

I have a biracial son, we lived in probably one of THE most tolerant cities in the US (Berkeley) and he has experienced bigotry throughout his life. So I agree it doesn't matter where you live, you're bound to experience racism in this country ... maybe by varying degrees ... but the beast is live, healthy and very ugly.
Being a mom I completely relate to your anger and frustration. Frankly, I don't believe eating an ice cream is going to make you feel any better. Nor do I think it is possible 'not to let it get to you'. It absolutely DOES get to you, it IS frustrating because there is so little you can do about it. There's no special equipment or measures you can take to protect your kid from this ... and what more does any parent want than to spare their children unhappiness? There's also a measure of guilt that I felt as the parent ... after all, dad and I were the ones who made the decision to have a biracial child in a racist society.
So, no real words of comfort to offer other than, I really do feel ya! hang in there.
JK - yes, mulatto is from another time ... the time when black folks were colored. Mulatto is mostly considered a pejorative term, and emanates from the word mule ...
