Birthdays—Simple Deconstruction of the JW Rationale

SBF, I would love to see some evidence that people are NOT supposed to be disfellowshipped for celebrating birthdays. I have a second-cousin whose elder body was apparently oblivious of that exclusion. The CO was apparently oblivious, as well.

I think maybe you still don't really know how the organization works. The brochure my niece carried to her teacher says JWs don't celebrate birthdays. If a JW celebrates a birthday, either they are very sorry for having done so and assure their elder body it won't happen again or they are "no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses."

Because ANYTHING someone does that is organizationally labeled something Jehovah's Witnesses don't do is sufficient for disfellowshipping. Among JWs, "Jehovah's Witnesses" is synonymous with "true Christians", and anyone who did something a true Christian wouldn't do is obviously a false Christian.

When was the last time you heard the reason for disfellowshipping announced from the platform?

Two weeks after my DA letter was accepted and the announcement was made, a Local Needs part was given on the dangers of Internet pornography and Internet chat rooms. Guess what the local congregants thought I was involved in? They were asking my wife why she was staying with me.

Do you actually believe the statistics the organization gives are accurate? They have EVERY reason to engage in creative accounting about the reasons people leave. They lie freely and frequently about "apostates" and have EVERY reason to do so.

I know that you cast a suspicious glance at the organization every now and then, but I believe you still want to think better of it than it deserves. Research it out, please. And let me know what you find. For my cousin's sake. Although, now he celebrates other things, too, any of which would ALSO get him disfellowshipped.

    Respectfully,
    AuldSoul

    SBF,

In any debate with a JW, if they actually believe what they say they believe, Romans 14:1-18 trumps Origen.

Poppy brought out the point about the use of dogs in the bible and how the bible portrays them. I particularly liked that line of reasoning. Thanks, undercover!

Auld, can you give us something about busting up the reasoning behind the attention-to-self thing that some witnesses use as a reasoning against birthdays. I think there is a reference to a scripture that says something about better is the day of ones death than the day of one's birth.

    erandir,

My response isn't scriptural but more of a common sense type of thing.

I posted this earlier in the thread:

at a wedding anniversary party or between a couple - who gets the gifts and praise. Who gets lauded with memories from the past and questions about how they made it all those years together. who is called a great example for all to follow. THE COUPLE!! not god. final question: who gets the gifts?

the same thing is true of baby showers. who gets the gifts. who sits in front of everyone opening the gifts and passing them around and thanking them for their generosity. THE COUPLE!! not god. final question: who gets the gifts?

Of course, others will probably have a more logical or scriptural discussion but that is my 2 cents.

    Listener,

Your two cents are like 4 cents in my book. Thanks. (I have a very good exchange rate, I guess.) That's valuable reasoning to have because I still have a wife in the org (I don't want to call it the borg, btw, cuz i'm a big star trek fan and don't want to insult star trek by comparing it with such a loathsome thing. )

Great thread, AS. Thanks for the info. I might also add that John the Baptist wasn't beheaded because of Herod's birthday celebration. He was beheaded because of the request of Herodias and her daughter and his oath to her. And it the account does not state explicitly that his head was brought to the birthday celebration. It could have been brought to her later.

    AS,

I really enjoyed your post and your reasoning. I'm saving it in the off chance that I will be able to use it. Very logical.

Enjoyed a lot of the others comments too.

Happy birthday in advance to you!

    erandir,

My wife is still in the organization as well. The reasoning presented must be simple and clear to be of real use. My spouse will not listen to long winded explanations about why something is ok to do. I've been fairly successful in some areas and fantastically unsuccessful in others. Guess that's life.

This is an excellent thread and is the type that will really help a newbie and someone with family still in the org.

    Good luck erandir

I want to save this thread, but am not sure what the best way is. I've copied the http link into a word doc and saved it there.

Someone on JWD once mentioned bookmarking threads - not sure how that is done. Please help as that may be another way of doing it.

    thanks
