Altering reality where do you stand......

To fill you in and explain my post....... I was raised as a JW but left (not baptised) at 16. I started studying again at 24ish and was quickly baptised and got disfellowshipped aged about 32ish.

Whilst I was active as a JW I socialised plenty, but it did not involve copious amounts of drink or drugs. During my times out I have very very occasionally smoked a little dope and have been drunk more often but by no means frequently. My experience since disfellowshipping have been that folk love to get out of their faces, abandon sense and talk absolute gibberish. Now I am not including all and everyone here but there does seem to be a need for people to use alcohol and drugs as a means to escape reality or to enjoy themselves. And if I am quite honest whilst I enjoy a glass or three of wine (or maybe four) I dont feel the need to get obliterated and I feel nervous of people who do. I cant seem to get into the whole big drinking (or drugs) thing (by drugs I actually mean dope). I wonder if this is to do with my JW experience and their teachings, wether it is to do with the fact that my mum has always drunk and can be quite nasty and obnoxious when she has had to many or what it is.

I am just not that relaxed around people who are excessive and I cant seem to go with the flow on it........and I tend to view people getting wasted as a means for them to escape reality because they dont like what their life is.

Does anyone else have opinions on this subject?

    Hi fifi,

I enjoy a few glasses of wine myself, and I have smoked since I left the jws, not the best idea really.

To me, it's common sense to practice moderation in pastimes like drinking. Maybe your jw days do influence you a little, but you are wise to not get caught up in heavy drinking and use of dope. Things like that used in moderation can be very enjoyable, but overuse is potentially dangerous healthwise.

Whatever your reasons for not going heavy on drink or drugs, it's good that you don't. What's the point in wasting a load of money on getting to the point that you can't remember what was actually enjoyable about the night out?!

I am just not that relaxed around people who are excessive and I cant seem to go with the flow on it

I can relate to this discomfort too. For me it was because my dad used to get drunk and he wasn't nice. One of my brothers gets drunk - he's a 'happy drunk', but I still don't cope well around him even.

It is my view that we become who we are. It is a process of discovery.

Some dogs chase cars. It is the nature of that beast to do so.

As we journey from sperm/ovum to adulthood; it is largely a slow process of differentiating what it is WE are that can identify us as unique among all others.

Sometimes the only way a human can become unique is to make their hair spiked and scribble a tatoo on their butt.

Others develop a life of the mind. Still others accomplish great things or earn vast amounts of money.

But, one thing shared commonly among humanity is the desire to escape from prison of mere being.

We cannot crawl out of our own skin of identity like a caterpiller becoming a butterfly, so, we escape vicariously through altering the chemical constituency of consciousness itself!

If we are really good at tuning our mind out of reality we can create a virtual non-reality and buy into it. Hell, we can even create something so much "better" than the real world we can live in it.

In our own dream world we can be cabbages or kings.

This is where drugs, alcohol, religion and insanity come out to play.

Who we are is what we choose to do with our life.

Are we creating our life moment to moment into something that adds up to MORE than what we born to? Or, do we devolve into a puddle of fantasy fueled by chemicals and unrestrained escape?

Our intellect and our character are revealed by how we spend our time.

The hardest moment in our life comes---not when we die---but, when we stop hiding the truth of what we are from our very selves!

    Can we own it?

If I had 3 or 4 I would be obliterated lol!

joking aside, I too feel uncomfortable with those who have the NEED to get drunk out of their minds all the time...I understand when one does once in a blue moon, it's usually all in good fun

I enjoy the ocassional shot at the bar, or sipping a drink, and I enjoy the once a month 2 or 3 drags from a joint....it's looked at as a treat, not as an everyday occurance, (though I know some people who blaze(smoke pot) multiple times a day, and they interact with others normally)...

i think everything in moderation, anything in excess cant be good for ya....

I think people who consume a lot of mind altering substances are trying to escape something. I have experience with drugs( canabis, psychotorpic musrooms and extacy) My last experience with drugs was not to good. About 4 years ago I got really sick and I was not sleeping for a while so I made a pot mufin to help me sleep, not a good idea. I had a fever and was dehydrated. It was a bad mix. I woke up in the hospital. I only remeber thinking it was the end of the world and god was talking to me. So I went outside screaming and runing. It was December and it was -25c. I was bare foot. So yes people on drugs can do crazy things and it normal that you don't feel relaxed around exessive people. I don't do drugs any more.

Nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of life. Some dope the odd time wouldn't hurt, maybe if it's excessive, then yes. Same with drinking alcohol.

But then again, too much of anything would hurt you in some way.

The JW's are extremists, and it's very hard to let go of their way of thinking after you leave. The only reason why alot of people are in it, is because "it's a better way of life and it's a protection, it keeps you out of trouble". I've heard people say it many times.

To me personally, that's hardly a good enough reason to be part of it.

I remember one elder said during a talk " Even if their wasn't a paradise and their wasn't a reward, being a Jehovah's Witness would be the best kind of life".

That just tells me Witnesses are blindly following what the Society says. Even if the Society came out and told it's followers they were scandals the whole time, their would still be some Witneses who wouldn't accept that it's true.

Live your own life, make your own boundaries, have fun doing it.

I have been around plenty of people who were never witnesses and they feel the same, I don't think witness mentality has anything to do with it, some like the party scene.

I am just not that relaxed around people who are excessive and I cant seem to go with the flow on it

I too was around drunkenness and violence, I too don't care for it and many times when a "happy drunk" is around I still find it annoying, but not every time as I dont want to think any less of someone who may have had too much to drink.
