Or John 19:29, which says they actually put the sponge to his mouth.

Yeah the answer depends on whether it is before he died (e.g. sponge), before he was resurrected (e.g. the people who buried him), or before he ascended (in Luke, Jesus had the fish after he was touched by the disciples).
