GAG #30: DISAPPEARING VESTS -- A SIGN OF THE END?

    *** g27 3/23 p. 391 A Millennium With No Vests ***

THOSE who doubt that the millennium has already started are confronted now with the fact that in England last summer even native-born Britishers, some of them, appeared in public without any vests on. To be sure they wore double-breasted coats, buttoned tightly, so that nobody would see their suspenders; but who can doubt that the millennium is here when a male Britisher dares pass through a stifling hot day without being closely girdled with a vest?

GAG #31: NUCLEAR POWER, A HARBINGER OF THE MILLENNIUM

    ***g27 1/12 p. 241 Science Sees the Millennium Surely Coming ***

THE millennium is surely coming, according to Professor James F. Norris, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, President of the American Chemical Society. These words are not to be treated lightly; for the Massachusetts "Tech" stands at the head of technical institutions in the United States, and the American Chemical Society has no peer on these shores.

Prof. Norris points out that we now know the atoms to consist of unthinkable amounts of bound up energy, that we have learned how to obtain and use energy with a high intensity factor, and that just as soon as we have learned how to touch the secret springs which hold the atom together we shall have a limitless supply of energy that will make over the world.

When that time comes, according to Prof. Norris, there will be no more underground slaves, no more coal barons, and, to use his own language, "an economic upheaval would force upon the world a change from the present unsatisfactory system based upon gold, to a more rational one based on something more fundamental -- perhaps the value of a man's labor, or on necessary commodities."

GAG #32: OF WOMEN AND MEN

    *** g27 1/26 p. 262 The Weaker Sex ***

NOW that by swimming in record time across the English Channel, and from Albany to New York, women have demonstrated that the men are really the weaker sex, the suggestion is being made that the men may conclude to relapse into their old barbaric habits and expect the women to do all the work of the family while their spend their time sitting around smoking and telling stories. Girls better take note that it does not pay to get the name of being too athletic.

    *** g27 4/17 p. 463 Feminine Confusion in Turkey ***

TURKISH women are said to be confused by their new liberties. Many have even gone insane, while others have suicided. An incidental feature of interest is that the way they now wear their veils in turbanlike swathes about bobbed hair makes a far more fetching headgear than any hat the civilized west has yet produced.

    *** g27 12/28 p.207 Shall I Send Her to Business College ***

Woman's place in the business world is much like her place in the home. Broadly speaking, she is the shock absorber. When an excited employer rushes her in the preparation of sales letters and specifications, her unruffled disposition and calm fingers on the keys must guard against mistakes. She should have confidence in the ability of the men who must necessarily take the offensive in the fight for an existence. A woman's desk in an office can be, and often is, a haven of refuse and help for discouraged salesmen....

All this would seem to show that a woman's place in business is a strictly feminine one. If she affects masculinity she defeats herself at the start. If an employer wants masculinity, there is still plenty of legitimate masculinity to be had. If a woman is to be valuable in business she must possess the qualities that make for true womanhood; viz., cleanliness, orderliness, economy, gentleness, courtesy, kindness, cheerfulness, honesty, intelligence. Why should a woman try to imitate a man when there is so much he does easily that she never can do at all and when she can do so much that it would appal a man only to consider?

    *** g29 7/10 p. 651 A Peeved and Jealous Male ***

Why is it that women can go so thinly clad in wintry weather, with practically nothing on up to the knees, and then some, and nothing above that to keep out the wintry blast....On the other hand, the little boys are treated to warm underwear with long stockings up to the knees and trousers down to the instep, with good warm shoes and sweaters, coats or blouses to protect their chests and get them in line for the presidency.

If the Devil is not in this game (for it is a game of temptation), who is? That it is of the Devil there seems to be no doubt. The inclosed illustration of four nude women exercising in the snow, all "indifferent to the fact that it is 10 degrees below zero," warrants this conclusion, when coupled with the narrative in this journal recently describing the performance of show men who danced barefoot in a red-hot pot and handled fire and wallowed in it without injury, and which was ascribed to demonism....

The spike heel that puts the weight on the ball of the foot can be only injurious to the delicate mechanism, and puts a certain amount of strain on the pelvic organs. A chiropodist might make revelations on this line. But to get the sensation of high heels, stand on a sharp slant or hillside, toes pointing down, or tack a two-inch block on your own shoe heels. Women who become insensible to such inconvenience and unnatural walking might become partly insensitive to cold. The Devil's magic that enabled the performer to dance in the hot pot barefoot could even work this wonder among the many that he tempts. He thus deceives the whole world.

The so-called healthy girl of today does not compare with out mothers and grandmothers who bore ten to thirteen children, as compared with one to three for the vain woman of the present. Our mothers needed no dope or pallatives to help out in the ordeal of childbirth, as is now the practice, and which often destroys the child while attempting to save the mother the necessary pain to bring forth. It is stated, and reasonably so, that the results of insufficient protection to the lower extremities (which means up to the waist line) produces coughs, consumption, headaches, pain in the side, menstrual derangements, uterine congestion and disorders that unfit for the duties of motherhood and life.

Practically nothing on up to their knees..boy would they be shocked today. It's more like nothing on up to their ...well you know.

And we all know that spiked high heels are from the devil!!!

At least when they start ruining your feet you will feel that way.

    Snoozy...

It's not just f-me spike heels but the author seems to think that high heels in general (which puts the weight on the ball of the foot) allow the wearer to come under demonic influence. Gotta love the sexist nonsense about women in the workplace....it's so Mad Men. That and the criticism of the "vain woman of the present"; what does this guy know about the "ordeal of childbirth"?
