COULD YOU KILL SOMEONE?

Duh, the question is so intrinsic to my concept of self-defense that I can scarcely assign it any merit. I think this sums it up pretty well--I'm a southerner.

    Subject: Liberals, Conservatives & Southerners

Question: How do you tell the difference between liberals, conservatives, and southerners? Answer: Pose the following question: You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges. You are carrying a Glock 40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

    Liberal Answer:

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior. This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.

    Conservative Answer:

    BANG!

    Southerner's Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click.... (sounds of reloading). BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click. Daughter: "Nice grouping, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips?"

Prophecor, I seem to remember you were a Sting fan like me. "Murder By Numbers" by the Police ("Synchronicity.") Good stuff; must've listened to that tune a thousand times. And, funny thing, I never murdered a single person.

If it were a matter of my survival I think I could. I know I would live with the guilt forever. This is a hard question for rainy Monday.

my first thought was NO WAY but when I actually think about it you never know until your faced with a kill or be killed situation, hopefully never have to face that decision

    Yes.

Hurt my son, and you must die. I mean real hurt (molest, deliberately maim, etc). Hit my son, and you will get the beat down of your life, but you'll live through it

I would do whatever it takes to defend myself and my loved ones. And I am talking immediate danger, not plotting to ambush someone. But, instinctive, protective reaction?

    Yes, with no guilt.

I would try to stop the person if they were trying to kill me; if that means they die, I can do it. These situations are rare; for the most part it is better to call the police if you can.

I would recommend taking some kind of defense class like Chimera. I don't mean karate or something like that either. Most people never get to the level that would do any good. Chimera is common sense self defense; getting mentally prepared.

There are somethings that I don't wish to do, but would do under extreme circumstances. Killing someone as a result of self-defense is something I would never wish to have to do, but I suppose I could do it. My adrenaline kicks in when I see certain things happen, and I can really dumb-found myself.

Ballistic asked: What's on your mind Mary?

    I'll never tell.

Seriously though, I was reading in the newspaper this morning about that terrorist son of a bitch Moussaoui who is the only person so far to be prosecuted for the 9-11 attacks, and I read Flight 93's cockpit transcript which really bothered me and I thought "...how many people would kill this guy if they had the opportunity to?"

I know I would........I just wondered if anyone else felt the same way or if I'm just a loon out on my own on this one.
