    MySpace.com Assaults
    by Terry Phillips

Girls put too much information about themselves on the web.

In what may be just the tip of the iceberg, eight under-aged girls have been assaulted by men they met through the web's newest rage, social blogs. The girls, between the ages of twelve and sixteen, are all members of MySpace-dot.com and put too much information on their websites. All eight cases occurred in Connecticut. That puts State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in charge and he suspects the problem is larger than Connecticut.

"I can only guess, but clearly this website is a predators dream and a parent's worst nightmare."

And MySpace isn't the only social blog out there. If you hear your kids say words like Xanga, FaceBook, Friendster, you want to get involved. Tom Neven, Senior Editor at Plugged-In Magazine, says just posting a school-name on such a site can start the trouble.

And then they'll post pictures of themselves with their friends. That's plenty of information for a very smart predator to be able to track you down and figure out who you are."

The craze over social blogs is growing. Staca Urie says they're the buzz with many middle and high schools students.

“Their comparing how many buddies and friends and links they have on these types of web sites is only adding fuel to the fire and making them more popular."

Daniel Weiss of Focus on the Family Action says parents have to come to grips with internet danger.

"Parents need to understand that anytime they let their kid go online alone it's as if they allowed a stranger into their child's bedroom and the stranger closed the door."

In Connecticut, Blumenthal is warning the social blogs to police themselves or he'll take action. The girls in Connecticut were all lucky in that the face-to-face encounters involved no violence. All the girls expected to meet boys their age and instead met adult men who had lied to them. One of the men traveled more that a thousand miles.
