It really depends what you associate with it even Christmas was once a pagan feast but it has long since become a totally Christian one with all pagan associations forgotten and unknown. Mithra the pagan sun god became Jesus the Christian sun of righteousness.

i know many non-jw christians that do not celebrate hallowe'en because they don't feel it is an appropriate thing to do. many pentacostals and orthodox religions are non-halloween celebrating

I look at it as being similar to just about any other tradition that is in existence today.... many of them at one time or another may have had some aspect that may have had a pagan origin, but the MODERN application or understanding no longer holds those connotations. Like wedding cake, wedding rings, mothers & fathers day, Christmas or any of the other holidays. Meanings change, times change....no harm done.

I do make it a rule in my house that no scary costumes are allowed - maybe when the kids are teenagers, that will change, but for now nothing scary, but that is my personal preference. This certainly is not my favorite holiday, and I really don't even care about the holiday itself, but I get much enjoyment out of seeing the kids participate in something innocent like dressing up in costumes getting some candy for the simple reason that I never got to.

My kids never think about satan when it comes to halloween...it's all about dressing up and getting candy

That's the way I looked at it when I was a Kid. Still, we need to consider how God might feel about it.

To Gretchen956 or any other Wiccan on the board who is in the US:

Did you perchance watch "Boston Legal" tonight? That was a pretty funny episode. The law firm was representing two parent couples who objected to the school's Halloween spectacle: a born-again Christian couple and a Wicca couple. The two were on the same side because they were offended by the program but for different reasons: the Christian couple thought that the witches so portrayed were "satanic" and witches were "devil-worshippers", and the Wicca couple said they were offended by the negative stereotyping of witches and its misrepresentation of what Wicca is about. What was fun to watch was seeing the Wicca couple get offended by the Christian couple for misrepresenting Wicca themselves, and then complaining to the law firm that the testimony of the Christian couple was just perpetuating myths about their religion. Then, when they testified themselves, the Wicca mother went into the history of Wicca and how it was revived after the anti-witchcraft laws were repealed, the three-fold law, and how Wiccans were persecuted for centuries ... by Christians (again fraying the "alliance"). Anyway, I thought I'd mention it in case you missed it....

It's like all the other idiotic crap that goes on around here , by the time it actually gets here I'm so sick and tired of hearing about it I want to scream my lungs out . It's all a money making gimmick that's all it is and you are right it is extremely pagan, that the christian church thinks they can just up and make it christianized is completely absurd .

I think more the prodestants are againt All Hallows eve because they feel there are a lot of pagan origins and its devil worshipping.

However the true meaning of Halloween is not very well known, I think the meaning of All Hallows eve is, on the 1st of November it is 'All saint's day" Which is a Catholic tradition.

    This is discussed here http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=81695

You would be interested to read that thread.

here is a good site http://www.seekwisdom.org/articles/cathhalloween.htm on the Catholic stance on it.

my boss is a pagan, and he didn't come in yesterday at all. he comes in today and says he still hasn't eaten anything, and that he is still hung over from oct 31, his "new years" celebration.

i had to laugh. damn, he's a cool boss man.

Even post-JW I didn't care for Halloween, but I have gone to a few parties and dressed up the other night.

I also recommend Pagels' book, and anything she has written. In fact, I might dig out of my library and re-read her Origins of Satan book this week.
