    Iron Maiden close second, but that's just me personally.

    I've seen the Temptations with their different lead singers. IMO, they were one of the best sounding, melodic groups with diversity and great dance routines.

    Of course, I'm inclined to agree with Littlerockguy and give some props to Elton John. The thing is, by asking who is "Number One" Minimus, do you mean in terms of popularity, influence, record sales, or all three and maybe other factors?

    Assuming it's some combination of the above, here's a partial list of who I think are tops in the rock n' roll era, not necessarily in order of being my favorites:

    Bands - The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Eagles

    Solo acts - Elvis Presley, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan (influence only - the guy can't sing), Billy Joel, David Bowie
