GODS NAME...Respectfully Address God

I posted this on another thread but didnt get a response. I would really like others input on this.
Even if "Jehovah" is Gods actual name, which I doubt,
has anyone ever considered the possibility that God may not want us to address him by his "name". When Jesus prayed, he prayed "our father in Heaven" giving God respect by addressing him as "father". I think its disrespectful for anyone to think they are on any similar level to address God by his name. Do we call our parents by their first names? I know the bible says his "Name" will be preached throughout the nations. "Name" also means what someone stands for.
    My dictionary reads,
    "Name",
1."word by which person or thing is known",
    And,
    2."distinguished reputation"

My guess is the W.T.S. took yet another scripture literal when it should have been looked into more deeply.

I believe "in Gods name" means what God stands for, his good name and reputation.

I don't know. Not sure if I believe in the same kind of God as you anymore. But I was shocked after all the warnings about idolatory when they published the "Revelation, anti-climax" book with pictures of Jehovah in it.

This is a new one to me - I will have to have to give it a bit of a think - one thing's for sure, I have often thought about why the original manuscripts of the Greek Scriptures that supposedly had Gods name throughout dissappeared. Surely God should have ensured that this would not happen?

    ballestic,
I dont think I have a copy of the Revelation book anymore. I didnt realize it contained pictures depicting "Jehovah".
    Are you serious?

Heaven, yes. I don't have the book anymore either but there was a figure sitting on a throne in shining light and depicted in yellow / gold with a blanked out face. I'm sure this was depicting God. Perhaps someone with the book can back me up here?

I believe the word "name" stands for so much more than just a superficial title. I mean come on, just because someones first idea of "name" is being someones written name doesnt mean that is how God intended that scripture to be taken.
I dont think God is that shallow to want his pronounced name to be praised throughout the nations. It has to mean something more profound.

I thought about this a lot. Come to think of it, it was one of my points of contention when I was just a bible study. If it was so important to use God's "name" then why didn't Jesus use it?

This is what I think now: God doesn't want JWs to use his true name. That's why he lets them keep using the erroneous name "Jehovah".

Since what they teach and practice in no way represents who God is and what He is about, I don't blame Him.

    My larger dictionary reads,

    "Name"
    1. Word or words by which a person is spoken to.

    2. Descriptive word or words applied to a person or thing.
(someone called someone a descriptive name)

    3. Reputation; fame

    4. Famous person
(One of the great names in history)

    5. In the name of, a. with appeal to b. acting for

    6. Nominate

Yes you are right...the revelation book does have a picture depicting Jehovah on a throne without a face....as described in the bible by John as what he saw in his vision. But that picture is not used in every publication mentioning his name nor is it hung up in the kingdom halls or in jw homes...it is not used as a piece of idolatry, it is an illustration only, helping us to envision how spectacular heaven would be if humans could see it.

Even Jesus' pictures vary in the publications so as to not put emphasis on the what the man looked like and how he was hung, but rather on the works he performed while on earth...what he looked like does not matter.

    bluesapphire,
    That is so true.
I also believe that if it was so important that everyone have the absolute correct translation and interpretation of the bible, Im sure God would have made sure there be only one.
It is written in the bible that we are not to judge others, for by this judgement, we will be judged.
Maybe God doesnt care about everyone having completely accurate knowledge as much as how we treat eachother in the proccess.
