Trinity?

I am reading the bible for the first time. I was DF'd in 1976 and lived my whole life thinking the JWs have the truth and I just could not live up to the standard and was doomed to die at the big A without question. Until I found JWD 31 years later. Sad but true.

So, now, I am reading the bible trying to figure out WHAT I believe, if anything. I read Revelations ealier this week (whoa) and last night I read John I, II,and III. (KJV).

Anyway, 1 John 5:7 reads, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

Sounds like a trinity to me. Am I missing something here?

Any thoughts or comments will be greatly appreciated.

That's a source of major debate. It all depends on which religion you ask.

From an agnostic's point of view, the wording of the scripture would imply divine attributes to all three.

Many folks contest those verses as a scribal error. The Trinity isn't explicitly mentioned in the Bible. There's plenty of implicit reasons to take a Trinitarian viewpoint, though, and the Early Church Fathers are worth reading to see how this doctrine developed.

Most of all enjoy your studies and try not to get too hung up on dogmatics. At the end of the day its supposed to all be about "love", right?

    LT, of the "Trinitarian" class.

    BFD,

I have found no definitive answer to that one, and I researched it for many years, both pro and con.

Perhaps a better question to ask yourself is:

If God is Love, does he care how we interpret His substance?

    Or:

Is this a matter that one must have the answer to to be afforded salvation?

    BA- Believes it doesn't matter.

PS- We will find out, or not, when we die..

    Para - I agree

LT - Great advise. And yes, so far it is all about love.

BA - I don't think it matters either way. If it did, the Divine would have made it clear, plain and simple. btw - you are one funny brother. You really crack me up.

Wasn't one verse used to prove the trinity actually inserted about 1600?

    Not sure which one.

Reading the NIV, or any Bible not translated by a demon-led translator, it sure does sound like a Trinity doesn't it? These three are one or and the Word was God (John 1:1), or Phil 2:5,6 - our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature[a] God. Sure does huh? Make ya think?

So, now, I am reading the bible trying to figure out WHAT I believe, if anything. I read Revelations ealier this week (whoa) and last night I read John I, II,and III. (KJV).

Just to be nitpicky, there is no "s" in Revelation, lol. Second, try to get a modern translation. I would suggest the NASB, NIV or NLT (in order of my personal preference).

1 John 5:17, as most have said already, is nearly universally viewed as a scribal insertion. It doesn't bother me, since there are other Scriptures that make implicite Trinitarian statements.

While I commend you for picking up the Bible, might I suggest that you start with the Gospels? John, Matthew, Mark & Luke, in that order. I wish you the best on your journey.
