It seems like alot of JW's get married really young. I blame the whole abstinence before marriage thing. I'm sorry about your brother. Your predictions for him are harsh but I've seen many on the same path he's taking wind up exactly as you are predicting. My husband and I got married young at 19 but not as dubs and we're happy 9 years later despite dire predictions. You'll just have to hope for the best, hope you're wrong and be there for him if it works out as predicted, I guess. It is a frustrating situation. -Margy

Does anyone else recall the John Denver Incident in the early 90's? My mom was a huge fan and had stacks of his records. ((shudder)) She used to listen to them all the time. (((double shudder))) In the early 90's a smurf-like rumor swept our circut that John Denver hated JW's and had kicked a bunch out of a concert in Colorado. The story went that he'd asked if there were any JW's in the audience. They cheered, and then he asked them to get out! Even at the time this rumor was current I had a hard time believing it. Anyway, the first evening she heard this my mother disposed of her beloved John Denver album collection and yea there was much rejoicing for my brother and me.

The local Elder King where I was from frowned on anything that was not polka, waltz, or country music.
My mother had an arbitrary system of sniffing out satanic music that left me very confused at best. The demons seemed to have a cut off date for posessing music, somewhere around 1975. She had great taste in music and introduced me to Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, & Frank Zappa among others. I was suprised yet not to see P-Funkadelic listed above. We used to listen to them all the time. While these bands were perfectly acceptable she thought Bon Jovi, Poison, and pretty much all the hair bands were posessed. She really had it in for Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Prince, and Michael Jackson too.
Our congregation's #1 demonized band was Motley Crue and my mom's best friend had a terriffic tale of her son's room being posessed by a Motley Crue cassette. She called my mom in to burn it. Anything Punk or Grunge was also viewed with suspicion.

Of the three, Bjork is definitely the best. Tori and Cher are both scary to me. Especially Cher!

Only if they can put my head in a jar like they do on Futurama that would suck though. Or if I'm frozen and re animated like Walt Disney hopes for, that would be kinda cool. I'd be 120+ years old though. I don't know if I'm up for that. My g-grandma got to be 103 and just existing day to day was difficult for her at that age.

Local Slang-Fluff
by smurfette ini noticed on little toe's jw chat thread talk of learning new slang words.
it got me to thinking we should all share some local or personal sayings so we can all understand each other better.
and who knows, with so many people here from all over the world, you could start an international catchphrase of the week!.

I noticed on Little Toe's JW chat thread talk of learning new slang words. It got me to thinking we should all share some local or personal sayings so we can all understand each other better. And who knows, with so many people here from all over the world, you could start an international catchphrase of the week!
So here it goes, from my local Northern Minnesota area:
1- UFF DA (oof dah) means a variety of things- oops, wow, that was heavy, what a good meal I can't eat another bite. In a sentence: "UFF DA, that was a good lunch."
2- Wah! (wah) shortened form of the Ojibwe word Ho Wa (hoe wah) means- Wow! In a sentence: "My grandpa left my grandma for a 17 year old." "Wah!"
3- ba nung (bah nuhung) means doesn't work in ojibwe. When used in in reference to a male it means impotent. In a sentence: "That ba nung man is late for our date again." "The ba nung freezer has left my ice cream soft!""Why don't you come out with me tonight baby, that ba nung man of yours won't even know."
4- roostin' (roosting) means throwing a rooster tail of dirt behind your vehicle as you drive recklessly usually while drinking heavily. In a sentence: "Whoo! Let's go roostin' I just got new mud tires for my truck and a case of Pig's Eye!" Pig's Eye is cheap local beer.
5- roostin' in da pits (roosting in dah pits) means throwing a rooster tail of dirt behind your vehicle as you drive recklessly in a sand/gravel pit. It also implies a keg party to follow in said gravel pit. In a sentence: "Whoo let's go roost in da pits" "Ya sure I got a keg and a couple bottles of mad dog!" Mad Dog or MD 20/20 is very caustic grape wine.
6- Ya sure you betcha (yah-sure-yoo-bet-chah) made famous by the Coen brother's movie Fargo. means yes but of course. In a sentence: "Ya wanna go roostin' we can leave that ba nung man of yours at home?""Wah! Yah sure you betcha!"
7- Swampy (swampee) means foul smelling city folk who've just been camping for two weeks without bathing once. They perceive themselves to be in a remote wilderness outpost and think they are fitting in in their disheveled smelly state. "There are too many swampies in the bar, let's go roost in the pits."

schizophrenia
by festival_mum inhi, just wondered what the jw stance was regarding schizophrenia as a mental illness/demon possession.
would be interested in some real analytical stuff as it is for a nursing assignment and there doesnt seem to be too much literature about the subject - everyone too busy harping on about the blood issue i suppose!!
personally i wouldnt have a tranfusion and it has nothing to do with my religious beliefs.

My father who was not a JW had schizophrenia, ADD, and clinical depression. My mother who was a JW always told us he was posessed by demons and would burn or get rid of items he gave us. Even after he was put on medication and there was a marked improvement in him she still thought he was posessed. It's not that she didn't believe he was mentally ill, but she seemed to think his illness opened his mind for the spirits to take over. I know, crazy! Others in our congregation and surrounding area held the same opinion. Poor guy bad enough to have schizophrenia, but then to have your ex telling your kids you're posessed!
I don't have any info regarding the WT Society's official stance, I only know my personal experience with this issue and that even if this is not their official stance, this is their common practice, at least in Minnesota. I've just finally reached a point in my life where I can even talk about my father's illness as many people from all religeons and cultures are very judgmental or afraid of schizophrenics and their families.
I think it's great that you are focusing on this little to never talked about subject for your assignment! If I can be of any more help to you at all feel free to PM me.

Are you comfortable with voting now?
by Brummie ini admit i have never voted (shame), the last couple of years i have decided to vote but when the time comes i back out.

I love to vote! I'm a registered Democrat/Independent too. The canidates I've picked haven't won recently but at least I've put in my 2 cents. I figure if you don't vote you have no right to complain about the current state of affairs, and that's something I love to do too.

Urgent Legal Help Needed: Asylum for a Minor
by kitties_and_horses_oh_my! ini'm going to be very vague and stick to just the most essential details (for reasons you will see):.
i am aware of a 17 year old (parents are dubs, he doesn't want to be but is forced to go to mtgs) who has been suicidal and asked a friend to come and get him from his home.
he left a note to his parents saying he is safe, etc., but his parents are already fairly sure of where he is.

How sad! A couple of friends of mine (sisters) ran away from home due to a highly emotionally and physically abusive JW stepdad. They were both around 16 or 17 and ran away at different times. In both instances their parents tried to retrieve them, the state got involved, and they went into foster homes until they were 18. In our area the local social workers recognized the problems facing JW kids and were very helpful especially with my friends added issues. Hopefully if the authorities do get involved in his situation they are as helpful as the ones in our area are. There are only 2 kinds of social workers the really good and the really bad, so it's a chance-y situation.
I personally came from a very emotionally abusive household and stuck it out until I was 18. Not easy but it's over now.
I would not recommend the institution idea unless he truly is suicidal. I know someone who did exactly that when he was 16 and it was a horrible experience. He wound up with more issues from being in the institution than he had before he committed. Professional counciling is better than an institution in my opinion.
