Step One
by Peppermint injust registered today after many months of being a silent spectator, hope to tell you a bit about myself in the days/weeks to come, but not just yet.
one step at a time as they say.
i have been helped so much by what i have read here, at first i expected to find bitter and twisted rantings, not so, you all seem very normal.

JW's - fascinating
by DanTheMan ini just signed out apocalypse delayed from the library.
i am looking forward to reading it after i post this thread.. what is it about jw's that i can't just walk away from it and forget it ever happened?
why is it that i feel such a kinship with those who have escaped, and why do i feel so compelled to educate myself on a group that i've left?

Remember that they always told us is wasn't a religion, it was a way of life. We opened ourselves to brainwashing, so it takes a lot of cleansing to get it out of every pore.
I didn't find this forum, nor did I have contact with ex-jw for nearly eight years after exiting. I feel validated by knowing all of you here on the board and have gained a lot of knowledge. It's almost like being in a foreign land and finding a group from your own country who can speak your language. It makes me smile, sometimes, to hear an old phrase that only those who have been associated with the wts would understand.
Dan, you're walking away as you're working everything through.

The turkeys ready.....
by morty ini just hope i am..... you see,i have been sick for days now, and so have been the kids with this damn chest cold...... they have been home from school and i have been laying on the couch for 3 days now....the house looks like a tornadoe went through it, and the butcher just called to confirm my 25lb turkey is ready to be picked up on tuesday for x-mas dinner... i am having 23 here to cook for, and i am not in the mood right now for it...so much work ahead of me right now.... anyways, where do you go for christmas dinner?
do you cook it, or does someone else do it in your family?.
i have aways done the christmas dinner at my house, but this year i am not feeling up to it at all...... do you think it would be rude for me to ask everyone in the family to bring something to the dinner?

Morton,
By all means, ask for help! We don't have to be martyrs or do it all. If someone is "hurt" by being asked to bring something, they don't have enough to do. I think the pot luck idea makes more sense, especially for such a large group. One of you get on the phone and enlist help - it's not rude, just practical.
For us, it will be beef roast, garlic mashed potatoes, home made rolls, veg, salad, apple torte. At our house, with me helping with the cooking.

Calling all - PLEASE!!! Big Step For Me.
by Doubtfully Yours innow, please remember, jw my entire life.
therefore, many prejudiced and warped ideas.. the deal is that a very nice co-worker invited me to a 'christmas play' at her baptist church and i accepted.
the play is tonight, and i have all these messed-up ideas that perhaps it's wrong to step foot into another church; or that perhaps since i've been taught all my life that demons reside in the false religion churches that i'll be bothered by these demons if i attend this event tonight.. please, help me win over these live-long thoughts.

I've been there and done it and I'm still standing. You'll worry until you walk through the door and lightning doesn't strike you! All will be well

Thinking of becoming a JW - Need urgent honest advice!!!
by natalienu ini have met a wonderful man but unfortunately he is a jw.
i have never been interested or really ever been around any religion in my life so all of this right now is very fascinating to me.
i have been thinking of studying to become one but am also having a hard time finding anything on the net that is positive about it.

I have a wonderful life as it is , have my own house at 26, a good job, a normal loving family, no childhood issues, I am just a normal woman really.
You honestly stand to loose all of this. In the wts, relationships between men and women are not normal. You will have to put your family last because they will be "worldly." You own your own house - be prepared that this man will loose your financial security. It is true that if you marry him, he will have the "Biblical authority" to take over your finances. Yes this is all worst case, but it is entirely possible. Please take a few steps back and look at this situation again, for your sake, the sake of your parents and siblings, and your future.

Does anyone have a good recipe for sugar cookies? I'm looking for the kind you roll out and cut with cookie cutter shapes.
Our tradition is to go out for Chinese food at lunch, buy the tree, and then eat lots of Christmas cookies and hot chocolate after we get it in the stand. Yum!

Just lost our parents....
by 2escaped lifers inwell, the shunning begins.
we finally had "the" discussion with my parents, that we no longer consider ourselves jw's, and a little bit of why we felt that way.
of course, "dad the elder and po" and mom the pioneer dutifully informed us that not only will they be "loyal to the organization" and shun us completely, but that he would immediately let the other elders know, so that proper judicial action could be taken.. it was a heart wrenching discussion, with all of us, including my two young boys (9 and 10) all balling our eyes out.

I admire your courage and the love you have for your own family. Ask for help you may need. This is the beginning of a new life of release and freedom; things will not always be easy in the next few weeks, but you've done a generous thing for your children. They will not have to go through this in the future. Good for you!

Anyone Else?
by Viper76Man ini have been out of the religion for several years now (was rasied in it so have 18 years under my belt).... although i was never shunned.
it seems to me that lots of people have been ignored by members of the jw's after leaving.
i expected this to be the case and expected my family members to begin to keep there distance.
