Which Spiritual belief system or non belief system is right for you?
by Giordano inwe have done this before but we have a fair number of newbie's on this site and some are struggling with the question about other belief systems and non belief.
where are you now in your own mind?
here's a quiz http://www.selectsmart.com/nontheism/ that is pretty accurate, at least in my case as to where i am at this point in my life.

Why do you need an alternative? Do you need alternative to make totalitarian group better like replacing Hitler with Goering and suddenly the National Socialism will get better? JW beliefs are fluid, it is one of the religious group out there that does not have defined theology. Whatever fits momentary explanation to WT and JW crowd is assumed to be Truth. It does not believe to the same principles I grew up and I have left 22 years ago. For example generation of 1914 that will never die to overlapping generation. WT is rotten to the core, and there is not much to salvage. Catholic church at leas run hospices and nursing homes, or taking care of developmentally challenged, while WT gives a crap about people who are sick, old, or mentally retarded.
If you believe in God who created everything around and this huge universe, do you really think that he will leave with humanity this poorly written book known as Bible? The book with laws that were already obsolete in late antiquity and caused the western World do follow Roman laws instead biblical? This book where scholars already 300 years go knew it was nonsense under confrontation with reality, science, and historical studies?

Is this the earliest WT reference to 1975?
by Splash ini thought that the 1975 thing started in the mid to late 60's, but it seems the seeds were sown two decades earlier.is this the earliest reference to it?.
18 how many today are awake to the fact that the lord christ jesus, by his resurrection of the faithful bride members that slept in death, is taking his "bride" unto his father's house and the marriage of the lamb has begun' .... they do not say, 'it is a long time yet to the wind-up, and, according to the present understanding of bible chronology, six thousand years of human history will end first in the coming seventies and till then it is a long stretch to serve the lord continuously and undividedly.'.
... they keep their eye and heart on jehovah's kingdom, and not on the time clock.

Actually, the year 1975 was proposed way back by Russell prior his death. If I find his book Studies in the Scriptures, somewhere there he mention the year as a last limit when people who somehow survived Armageddon will have a chance to repent or parish. WT pushed 1975 around 1968. My parents started to study around that time and my mom was baptized for this big hype. My non-JW relative was always smearing this to my JW aunt that she was preaching that 1975 year was IT, the big day. -

Diogenesister, Carpathian mountains are beautiful from Czech/Slovak borders (White Carpathians) to Polish/Ukraine/Slovak borders to Romania. Some deepest and best preserved woods in Europe, far from industrial city life. I was born in city, but I liked to escape for weekend into nature. We hiked sometimes up to 18-25 miles. The villagers were generally friendly, religious, and we can easily strike conversation, unlike in the city. We could pet sheep, goats, and pick raspberries along the way. My JW aunt tried once and was complaining that the forest trails were bad, and it was funny to see idiotic men in suit and tie walk through deep woods and mud.
Once we had elderette that refused to sit at farmer house by table because she considered the motifs demonic. It was hilarious. We were in this huge old farmhouse, and the old man had handcrafted table from 19th century. As in the mountains, the motifs were showing village life, sheep, wolves, etc, but this woman insisted that the wolves are satanic and refused to sit by the table or touch it.
Once I know JW family who went to field service into the mountains with their extremely spoiled city brats, and the kid was running around the cowshed until he felt into the septic tank/manure storage. They have to fish him out, what I heard he swallowed a bit, and they could not get the smell out of him for a while.

I did not like to do field service either. However, i liked to walk with one of the elder on weekends through mountains. In Carpathians there are small villages and scattered farms, so we used to take a bus and go to some random village and walk through woods, meadows, cow and sheep pastures, and between houses we talked about bible history, life, etc. While I never experienced anything threatening on the villages, I heard where witnessed were chased by farmer with pitchfork and walking canes. I never like doing city districts, and some industrial areas could be dangerous. We had elder who was beat up by gang of gypsies.

Mormons vs. Jehovah's Witnesses
by Downtowner inforgive me if this has been covered before but i haven't seen anything about it recently.. in exploring the two faiths, mormons vs. jehovah's witnesses, which were both founded in the 1800s with the mormons being slightly a slightly older religion it seems mormons is a more attractive religion than jehovah's witnesses.
do not get me wrong, i'm not looking at joining the mormon church.
but i still enjoy studying other faiths and different belief systems.

JWDaugher, glad you pointed out your gay friend. I have exactly opposite experience. I know or knew gay couple not far from me. One of them was ex-Mormon, but died of natural causes at age 50+. He was with his partner for very long time and started to suffer with various debilitating issues due diabetes on his feet. Had heart attack, etc. Nobody from his Mormon family came to visit him once, nor attended his funeral. However, they arrived with moving truck with idea that everything he owned will be theirs. I am not kidding. Glad the state had approved SSM year earlier, and family was out of luck. So after a lot of argument with the surviving spouse, they got old peace furniture from their grandma and left.

ATT: WARNING
by EJ257 inplease be aware of everything that is happening around the world at this moment in time.
this goes to anyone, ex-communicated, removed, serving, believer and non.
at this point in my observations i have realized many religions/ideologies know there is some sort "end of time" or a transition into a new order of living in this earth.

Big yawn
everything that is happening around the world at THIS moment
every moment was one point THIS moment.
his religion is completely correct on the context of the bible
On what level? The religion I left 22 years ago prior overlapping generation doctrine and growing up that generation of 1914 will never die?
it's always in my mind of the end being near
If is something like this stuck in your mind, it is time to see a shrink and get medicated. Every generation since the time of Apostles through that there were the last generation. Eventually Catholic church forbade doomsday beliefs in medieval times until they were brought up in the 19th century by crazy Northern American cults popular among pioneers.
Nature is even making a call, an insanely abornaml amount of earthquakes recorded daily by USGS.
Do you know that nature does not make any calls regarding earthquakes? Plate tectonics is vital process in recycling the Earth crust necessary for life on this planet. Earthquakes were also recorded on Mars... poor Martians.
Start to stock food
If WT would do it since 1878, I am certainly not interested on digesting food that is over 100 years old.

My experience with LDS is rather negative. I view them more negatively than me growing in WT. I had experienced deep racism from Mormons against my coworkers even in this age. They are also anti-Semitic. As American born religion, it is very ethnographic and narrow minded. -

Elder harassed my mom and asked for donation
by kaik inmy mom had surgery last month and she developed complication and had to be on antibiotics to treat infection.
so, she is recovering slowly, but things was tough on her and she was not attending kh or went to assembly two weeks ago.
nonetheless, elder showed up at her place and instead providing her with comfort he started to harass her that her faith is weak, she does not put trust in jah, etc.

JWdaughter, I told my mom not to donate money to WT. She told me that she donates regularly and sometime on assembly she put $100 or more into the donation box. She seldom skips program in the KH where she has a circle of the same age women like her. However, when she is sick and can't walk after surgery until she is healed, she is not attending programs. Her husband is taking care of her right now. Any case, I can't enforce her not to donate, it is her money and I do not control her finances. What pisses me off that elder showed for donation instead asking if she needs help with anything. I know she does not need any help as she has family living within one hour from each other, and her husband is there for her. But I just do not grasp that he will ask her for money and starts to argue with her, and than goes to talk to my sister and tells her that mom has weak faith to Jah.
She told me that one of her friend donated her savings to KH and willed her house to WT after her death. She is one of the woman, single, never married and available after Armageddon. One of the elder recommended that my mom should sell the house and move into studio (and probably donate the rest). I see WT became much greedy and demands more money for its operations.

So ... Russia and Nato at war? Should we be worried?
by Simon init seems unbelievable but turkey (a nato member state) shooting down a russian jet fighter on their syrian border seems to be "meh" news and no one is too bothered about it too much.. the world seems a bit upside down right now.
i don't think a lot of countries really know who the hell they are fighting and who is and isn't on their side in it all and really what is going on.. smaller incidents than this have led to major conflicts in the past but hopefully calm heads will prevail.
china shot down a us spy plane years ago and the world survived and forgot about it so things will move on i'm sure.. i'm guessing the price turkey pays for their gas supply from russia will be going up soon though.. man, that republican primary is sucking all the news attention from the room.

Prologos, but this is not war on Russian territory and mean little to average population, because Syria is distant country. While Russia seek out revenge for terrorist bombing of its airplane in Sinai, it has not much to gain to occupy Syria. USA did not gain much with occupation of Iraq, and it was very costly military adventure. The war in Ukraine is far more strategic risk for Russia and much more close. It is in their backyard in territory which Russia consider a birthplace of its nation.
Recession in Russia is a big deal because it will undermine Putin legacy. One has to look what ideology Eastern European have after the fall of communism. I can tell you the primary ideology there from Czech Republic to Russia is to hoard as much of material possession because entire generations were deprived of consumer goods. This region is not Western Europe where Green party ideology and environmentalist movement brainwashed many under 40 that it is nice to be poor/materially challenged, have bicycle instead of car, and live in closet size apartment as it is necessary for the environment. If Russia for prolonged period of time cannot experience steady consumer growth, the ideology of monetary self-gratification will suffer. Cumulative years of negative economic performance will wear down the society. Furthermore, recession had already undermined modernization of Russian armed forces. During the Great Recession in USA, military spending suffered as well. So waging a war in the middle of economic crisis can only impoverish population further.
