  what would you teach them with regards to religion, spirituality, god?

  i often wonder about this since i don't have any "beliefs" now or belong to any religous group.

  (sphere's thread got me thinking again) what if your children wanted to become a dub?

  Thanx for all the input and replies.

  Latte – I agree about spirituality vs. religion. I hope I will be able to instill some good basic values in our children. I guess it is simply getting used to viewing the two separately.

  Little Witch – your kids are fortunate that you are so open to them exploring this on there own.

  Spice – Yeah one cannot predict the future. Perhaps I should look at getting more comfortable with what I believe so if the need arises I can explain it to someone else.

  Free – I don’t think you robbed your kids of anything by not having them baptized. I firmly believe that any baptism should take place once a person is old enough to have weighed all options without it being decided for them. Sounds like your kids turned out great.

  Amen – Kids do tend to know what they like and don’t like. However I have seen posts where DF’d ones JW families attempted to pressure/impose there JW beliefs on the no-longer-a–believers children. (Not that I think any of my JW relatives would) but it makes me think…

  Since most of you have experience I guess it is simply another part of raising kids where you do the best you can with what you have/know. It is interesting to see that other people's kids have attended Sunday School. I always worried that the Sunday School's were a part of the churches.

  Brummie when your kids went to Sunday School was there pressure for your family to join any church?

  what is it that really irritates you ,i mean the most annoying ,thing that when you see it or hear it you just clench your teeth,we all have them so let's hear yours.mine is religious boasting.there is this home builder that advertises on tv and says his crap then says we are a christien company.oh yes , because he said that i would trust him more then anyone else,he must have higher standards.

  (ya right).or those people who advertise with bumper stickers of their religion,and yes the freaking door bell ringers trying to push their crap on me.isn't it what you feel inside?why advertise to everyone?does it make you feel more important or more religious?because of the attempt to show me that you have faith does not make me feel i could trust you.

  this is just one of my irritants and hope not do offend,everyone has the right.

  when i was df'd i had some relatives that i was not close to that were never jw's.

  the remainder were jw's.

  now i am married to someone whose only religious experience is sunday school.

  When I was DF'd I had some relatives that I was not close to that were never JW's. The remainder were JW's. Now I am married to someone whose only religious experience is Sunday School. Since he came into my life many years after being DF'd it was not a big conversation although at times has been discussed due to trying to explain the beliefs, religion due to events like our wedding and why certain people would be absent etc. I find the extreme extent of JW shunning to be one of the most difficult things to explain to a non dub.

  However I know a person who is inactive but has a spouse and child still active JW's. I also see on this board there are people whose significant other was a JW as well.

  From your experience does it make it easier to have a spouse or family member who can relate? Or does it make any difference at all? What about the person who was not raised a JW but joined and then left or was DF'd on there own? Or perhaps it is equally but differently difficult for those who have family who still remain while they leave (ie: spouse/children)? Does it make any difference if you leave when younger or older? Or is it pretty much just a journey no matter what?

  I for one am so thankful my hubby never had to experience the sting of this shunning or any of the other negativity related with the JW's. For the most part I think it doesn't really matter in our relationship since our experiences in life (even non -religious) are so varied anyway... I do however believe that being DF'd in my teens and having to experience this has changed me. Not to say that being shunned would be any easier at a later stage in life...but perhaps for me it may have been as I think at the point in my life when it happened I was still looking for acceptance and my place in my life, family etc. That being said...I firmly believe most things happen for a reason and every event in my life led me to this wonderful place I now call home.

  I talked to my daughter today

  as many of you may be aware, i am disfellowshipped and live in the same city as my daughter...we work a block away from each other in downtown vancouver.

  occasionally, i drop flowers off at the reception desk for her, with my home card, my business card, etc.

  well, today was the day when i decided to take it a step further.

  All I can say is Estee is beatiful inside & out! Her daughter sure is missing out & until her daughter comes to her senses I'm gonna borrow her mom! I am so lucky!

  Had a nice visit we'll have to do it again soon!

  Yep knew the rules – still hurts. I feel that deciding to shun someone simply for making a life choice about a religion or way of life (that really is not hurting anyone else) is extreme. I have seen JW’s completely shun a DF’d or DA’d family member/friend, and yet they turn around and make exceptions for another DF’d or DA’d family member/friend. I have also seen JW’s who make exceptions to shunning when it is convenient for them or when they need or want something – only to turn around later and shun again acting all self righteous. As far as the whole concept of leading them astray by association I find that silly. I do not want to get anyone to stop being a JW if that is what they need/want in life. I simply want them to accept my choices, and perhaps touch base and maybe have a meal once in a while. I do not understand how they can zero in on the scriptures that “seem” to support this arrangements but ignore all the ones about love, family, and not judging others.

  the canadian city of blainville believes it has the right to restrict how people express their religion in public in order to protect people's rights to privacy in their own homes.. jehovah's witnesses pay $100 for an annual permit for door-to-door visits of a non-commercial nature permit holders can canvass for only two months each year.. read the whole article on http://www.watchtowerinformationservice.org.

  I think this is a great idea. They are certain laws and then there are also general policies for telemarketers to protect people's rights to privacy in there own home so I don't see why door to door canvassing should be any different.
