it has been mentioned before but since we have been discussing environmental issues on another thread, i thought it might be timely to discuss rev 11:18 which has recently become a popular text for those christians concerned about environmental threats of pollution and climate change.

is this passage being interpreted correctly?

did the writer somehow anticipate the modern environmental situation, or did he intend something more in keeping with the bible's general concerns of morality and sin?.

It's a typical wt method. If one definition of an obscure Greek or Latin word or phrase doesn't support their dogma, then simply switch to another 'possible' definition of that word or phrase. The wt writers use such kindly expressions as "that must be what Jesus (or fill in the name) must of had in mind when he said______________", and then completely change the whole meaning of a scripture. Or just add a comma and the whole meaning of what Jesus said can completely change! lol

And yet we ate their crap for decades!

Thanks vienne for the English definition lesson. Sorry I struck such a nerve by referring to old CT as a charlatan. No he didn't sell 'snake oil' (just miracle wheat) he didn't sell other worthless goods (just lots of books that contained false and worthless information). His connection to pyramidology well here's a google search definition:

Pyramidology (or pyramidism) refers to various religious or pseudoscientific speculations regarding pyramids, most often the Giza pyramid complex and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

He resorted to quackery with his pyramid sh*t----but you're right--he wasn't a charlatan!

Jehovah's Witnesses Came to My Neighborhood

for nearly two years i have not seen any jehovah's witnesses going door to door in my neighborhood.

that was not the case when my wife and i first moved here (north central oregon).

in fact, our neighborhood was visited at least once every 4 to 5 months - even in the coldest winter months.

Couple of weeks ago I drove by the KH that I used to attend. It's located on what I'd call a semi residential street. There are both English and Spanish congregations using the hall.

4 older jw's were sitting in the shade of the trees along side 2 'witnessing' carts. 2 by the Spanish and 2 by the English! As we drove by I looked at my pimi wife and just said, WOW!

I've read some really good comments here about CT not being a charlatan! So just maybe he didn't start out as a charlatan, BUT he sure did embrace that role as he saw his followers increase and his delusional view of the bible gain a measure of acceptance.

Enjoy your freedom for at least a little while. Do a little research without the wt colored glasses and then decide if you truly believe. Me thinks you won't return to the wt organization.

You refer to CT as a "true believer". OMG the world if full of "true believers"! Charlatans can also be "true believers". I'm very familiar with old CT and his life. I'm 73 and a 3rd gen jw. My grand ma knew him and loved him. My mom knew of him and loved him. I grew up loving him because I didn't know about all the falsehood and delusional stuff CT "truly believed"! Religious people love their 'spiritual' leaders. That's why they fall for their bullsh*t!

Never read about old CT making an apology for any of his imaginary "end of the world" predictions that he believed in!

Based on this recognized definition of the noun ,charlatan, I don't think that it's too far off in describing old CT as a charlatan. He didn't disagree when referred to as the 'the faithful steward". He conned folks with 'miracle wheat'. He certainly thought he had special knowledge and was a gift from god! ( See the great pyramid inch scam!) He didn't give too much credit to others from which he "borrowed" their teachings. IMHO he was at best a kindly, gentle charlatan unlike his successor old booze Rutherford!

Can't say for sure, but like most charlatans, he probably borrowed bits and pieces from other charlatans and formulated enough bs together to make his religion different enough to be called a different religion! If you twist, spin, use symbolic, figurative, ambiguous language and interpretations, you can convince a lot of people who want to be convinced!
