I understand, I suffer from anxiety too although I won't pretend it's as bad as yours. The doctor will help, just grit it out, you will make it, I promise.

What I really hate....
by Perversion of a truth inis that i was born into this cult, taught and believed that i was going to live forever, , that i was never going to have to die.
now i am in my mid 30's realizing that this life is all there is and that after that i am dead forever and i am terrified.
i don't want this to be all there is, , i don't want to just live a few years on this beautiful planet and then become non existent forever!

Edmonton Convention 200 kms Away
by jgnat inthis has come up before but we ran in to an old guy from the hall over the weekend and he confirmed a few things about the change of edmonton venue this year.
i'd mentioned this old fellow, too.
a rare friend from the kingdom hall, a real character, and i genuinely miss him.

My family are being asked to travel abroad and stay in a hotel, the usual convention site is a 10 minute drive away, so I wonder if this is a worldwide cost cutting exercise or unique for international conventions this year?
Although, the convention they're attending happens to be 20 minutes from where I live now but they can't stay with me for free because it might stumble someone, so it's hard to feel much pity.

Why are some of you guys calling this new arrangement tithing?
by neverendingjourney inat the risk of being shouted down, i thought i'd point out that "tithing" means giving 10 percent of your income to a church.
it comes from the old english word teogotha meaning tenth.
i've seen nothing that establishes tithing in the watchtower.. while i'm all in favor of pointing out the watchtower's lies, hypocrisies and faults, the language we use matters.

This isn't even a new thing. Slips have been passed around asking for estimated contributions on numerous occasions.
Really? When? (not saying you're wrong Apognophos, just curious)
Most churches that practice tithing only 'encourage' it, it's not generally mandatory, and usually anonymous. Similarly 'passing the plate' is not required giving, but both can place pressure on the Congregation member to give, a pledge does the same thing. Though I think atm what's most interesting about this system will be seeing what direction (if any) they take it in.

Had an argument with my wife about tinkerbell :(
by BU2B inone of my co workers mother made my 4 year old a blanket with the disney character tinkerbell on it.
as soon as i got it i knew trouble lay ahead.
i wanted to reason with her before my daughter saw it so as not to cause a disruption, but it didn't work out that way.

"For instance, how does she plan on teaching your daughter not to steal?"
There's a Caleb video on that. 'Don't steal or Jehovah won't want to be your friend.' is the message.

Muslims much more likely to claim extremists misinterpret their scriptures then say they're wrong, in the same way evangelicals who support gay marriage tend to claim Paul is misunderstood rather than wrong.
I'm not claiming there isn't a serious problem with fundamentalist Islam or that many of them aren't dangerous, and certainly many Muslim majority countries have many oppressive policies, but if we have benign religious Jews we can have benign muslims.
Should be notable that the people on this thread who actually regularly interact with muslims are the ones defending them.

How has you life changed since leaving the Witnesses?
by cantleave inother than not wasting hours at meetings, assemblies and doing pointless activity.. for me the biggest difference has been my choice of employment, i could have never undertaken the job i do now when i was dub..
-
Laika
Well, before I left the JWs I moved country, but probably wouldn't have done that if I'd not been struggling with doubts and wanted to escape family pressures.
I got promoted a few months ago and would have had to turn that down as a JW, too much overtime. I could have been used at an assembly!
Much more diverse social group.

Religious people can be very inconsistent. My JW brother-in-law shares cigars with me from time to time, gambles, drinks way too much and talks to disfellowshipped friends, but still attends meetings and gets upset when I say anything 'apostate'.
I have no doubt that Ayaan has suffered, I'd never downplay that as an ExJW but people like Sam Harris have an agenda that forces them to buy into a kind of simplistic thinking that needs to categorise people imo.
