Along the lines of what runningman just mentioned, I do wonder if indeed more and more teachings will become symbolic of "spiritual" in their fulfillment. Who knows, maybe some day the "spiritual paradise" will be the only paradise that remains in jw teach-speak.

Know what makes me terribly sad about some on these forums?

to those people i'm referring to i say: you rightfully hope for the british and u.s. military to destroy that saddam monster and its minions of mass-murdering/worshippers throughout iraq.

Derrick, I'd add more, but the comments above mine suffice to disprove your assertion.
Just one thing I will add though....my little nephew, not even age 3, is, according to jw teaching, scheduled to die at Armageddon because his parents, two of the nicest people I know, are Lutheran - and of course, they are scheduled to die too unless the become jws. That's what they really teach Derrick. It had nothing to do with evil, and everything to do with who is a jw and who is not.

kinda boring sitting around in the heat (although i can't complain too much since we were in a nice patch of shade and had a decent breeze).

I've heard comments over the years about not wanting have kids "in this system" because it's too difficult and there are too many dangers, stuff like that. Of course, their whole mindset is that nothing will succeed outside the troof, so why bother.
If that is in reality your sis's thinking, then one day she may well look back with regret on a missed opportunity to start a family.

Weekend shot to hell by a simple knock on door

i am more mad at myself than anything.
yesterday (saturday) morning, after a very nice friday night of partying and chatting it up at my favorite lounge, knock knock on my door.

Goofy, I agree with all the posters here, especially those who mentioned that you need never feel obliged to answer your door. It's your property, your time. You are in control. Also, this unexpected calling binge that they are on is getting irritating. I have a note written and taped right above my doorbell. It says: "JW elders, please do not call today. You have called six times in the past two months. Thank you". And that's no exaggeration, they've been calling on me that often, even though I have been attending some meetings. Twice, they came while I was at meetings at another hall, when I decided to attend a moring meeting for convenience reasons.
Finally, I got tired of it and put that note up. They don't care about common courtesy like arranging a visit ahead of time. All they care about is their own agenda, and that means trying to catch people unaware.

Sadly rebel, what this shows is how unfortunate it is when someone opens a bible, reads one scripture, and then makes the strong assertion that it applies in that given situation, without looking at the context, as Blondie did in her comment. The scriptures have to be taken on balance, and actually, your original thought about simply following Jesus whole-souled is a very reasonable application of it.
One thing that got my attention - you mentioned that it was hard to think while your hubby was looking at you with "smoke coming from his nostrils". Well, that doesn't sound very Christian to me. Sadly, many jws lose all sense of what being a Christian really means once anyone dares disagree with them, or even states a alternate view.
