jesus was not born on december 25. that is not his birthday.
why is this day observed as jesus's birthday?
because some christians thought it was fine to mingle christianity with paganism.
Yes, I too am curious to find out why the speech pattern of Comforter has greatly deteriorated since this past summer. Can you explain this one Comforter without much help from the Watchtower Society?

Thanks for replying Comforter. Now for the juicy part:
Item 1: So you want to be picky? Our Savior also didn't tell us to
-NOT to celebrate his birthday
-mark our time spent preaching on a report sheet and hand it in,
-attend 3 assemblies a year
-go out in field service on Saturday and/or Sunday
-have 5 weekly meetings
-not have transplants between 1967 and 1980
-not have vaccinations prior to 1952
-shun college/university
-not participate in extracuricular activities at school
-celebrate Mother's/Father's day
-celebrate Valentine's day
-join the boys scouts
-join the YMCA
-be a member of the Red Cross
-play professional sports
-play professional music/sing
-go to Church bazars
-shop at the Salvation Army
-become a police officer
-learn matial arts
-buy lottery tickets
-date without a shaperone
-cannot do work in a Church if it's your only customer
-work on a military base cleaning barracks or cooking
-donate blood (If we can accept about 98% of it now)
-have tattoos
-pierce body parts other than ears
-wear pants at Kingdom hall if you're a woman
-wear a tie if you're a man
-own or wear a cross
-etc etc etc
(credit goes to Shaun's)
Item 2: your point about anything clean coming from something unclean is IRRELEVANT because the Apostle Paul doesn't make that application in Romans 14:5-9 and Colossians 2:16-17 when it comes to observances and feasts, now does he? Did you actually read these scriptures? I mentionned them for a reason, not just for good looks. Could these scriptures be interpreted to actually permit the observance and celebration of Christmas? Answer honestly now.
Item 3: You're dead wrong. The meaning of Christmas HAS changed since 2,000 years ago. Do I have to remind you that originally it was used to worship the sun and now it used to observe Christ's birth? Why are you playing these mind games with yourself?
Item 4: Early Christians and ancient Jews rejected birthdays? So what? Where in the Bible is it written NOT to celebrate birthdays? Remember the two verses metionned above. Remember what the angels did when Jesus was born. Also, Job's kids celebrated their own birthdays. Check it out in Job 1:4, 13.
Item 5: Your statement about wedding rings doesn't make sense. Its a classic case of circular reasoning. Ancient wedding rings WERE religious in nature.
Item 6: Where Jesus returned in 1914 or not, the point the fellow was trying to make was that using YOUR logic which is nothing but a repitition of WTS logic, the same could be argued about 1914.
Item 7: Funny how the WTS quotes from non-Witness literature only those portions which suits it's arguments and discounts the rest.
Please try using your own mental faculties in meditating on a given subject, and stop repeating the Mantra of others. Do you have your own brain? Then use it.

Comforter,
You're focusing on the wrong thing. But it's not your fault, you're just repeating the Mantra of your masters. However, consider the following points and mediate on them for a change:
-December 25th is not the day of Jesus' birth. Practically everyone worldwide accepts this including myself. It was originally used as a day of worship for the sun. Today however, the sun is not worshipped anymore, so the MEANING of that celebration has lost its original use. That day is instead set aside by Chrisitianity to observe and celebrate the birth of our Savior, since the exact day of Jesus' birth is not known. After all, not knowing the EXACT pronunciation of God's name does not stop the WTS from calling him Jehovah, now does it?
As an example, married people wear a wedding band. The origin of that practice is also pagan. But the MEANING of the wedding band is no longer that which the pagans used it for, and today only represents being married and faithful to one's mate. JWs also wear wedding bands and the WTS permits this and does NOT say it is a pagan practice. Why? because they wisely recognize that the meaning it carries today is not the same as with pagans in the past. Now if the WTS uses this logic with wedding bands, why doesn't it also use it with Christmas?
Furthermore remember:
-An angel declared to shepherds in the fields, "I am declaring to you the good news of a great joy that all the people will have, because there was born to you a Savior" (Luke 2: 10,11). The angels in heaven "praised God" (Luke 2:13) that Jesus was born. Yes indeed, there was feasting and rejoicing in heaven that Jesus was born. So why can't we also feast and rejoice on Earth that Jesus was born?
-The Apostle Paul says the following:
Col. 2: 16-17: "Let now man judge you in eating and drinking or in respect to a festival..."
Rom. 14: 5-9: "One man judges one day as above another, one man judges one day as others, let each man be fully conviced in his own mind. He who observes a day observes it to Jehovah...".
Paul was writing to congregations which were composed of both Jews and former pagans. Each group had their own festivities, including Saturnalis (Dec. 25). And yet Paul did not judge them nor disfellowship them for continuing to observe them, nor did he tell them to cease and desist. The important thing in the christian congregation was love.
Meditate on these points I just mentionned, because if you changed your name from Comforter to The Nameless One, it is because you're depressed and truly need comforting.

i just ordered "crisis of conscience" since mr. franz has been away from jw's for a number of years now-what exactly does he believe?
does he subscribe to any particular religion?
I read both books from Raymond Franz and I loved them. However, he has left me wanting for more. I would very much appreciate him writing a third book since there is much to say on other aspects of Christian life. I found that on some subjects he only scratched the surface, particularly in CoC, and could have given more details in the second book.
posting on wtlies thread i got to thinking about the shows i watched as a kid.
there were a couple that scared the &*^% out of me.
the old twilight zone where the little demon guy was on the airplane wing was really scary.
I watched The Exorcist when I was a kid. Needless to say, that night I slept in my room with the lights on and with a Bible on my chest.
we had a whole list of shows we were not allowed to watch including 'speed racer', you'll never guess why.
it was beacuse in the theme song it says "he's a demon on wheels" but then my mother was a jw fanatic lol.

My mom wouldn't let me watch the original Star Trek. Why? Because, and she would quote the Bible:" Finally brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern...(Php. 4:8). Since Star Trek wasn't true, as I christian I shouldn't be watching it. What a load of crap I had to put up with.

What's up? I'm getting "Page cannot be found"!
wollersheim v. the church of scientology was a 22 year court case, finally settled in may of 2002 with the payment of $8.6 million by the church of scientology.
it raises interesting issues of freedom of religion, and how responsible cults must be for the results of their actions.
case history summary.. in 1980, lawrence wollersheim filed suit against the church of scientology of california (csc), claiming damages for intentional and negligent infliction of severe emotional distress.
Brillant post Expatbrit! The similarities between the CS and the WTS is astounding. Do other states also have similiar laws such as California? If so, potentially lawsuits in all 50 states by thousands of victimized WT members/former members X 1,000,000$ each will definitely ruin the WTS financially.
"do you know anyone who kissed hank's ass, left town, and got the million dollars?
kiss hank's ass and he'll give you a million dollars when you leave town.
"item 7 says 'everything hank says is right.
Brillantly funny! I'm gonna make copies and distribute it to my Dub friends and family!
