Paranoia springs eternal... Let me tell you, the heavy hitters in the organization are so sure of themselves they coudn't care less what most people are doing. It's only the piss ants that get excited about that kind of stuff. It's a way of trying to make themselves look more important than they are.

Spy vs. Spy
by TR inprisca's comments about wol made me wonder about official wts sanctioned spies and moles.
we all know for a fact that to the wts lies are ok, and spying does happen.
does anyone know of officially appointed wts spies, or do hard-core militant and/or plain old sneaky jw's just feel it is their duty?

I've always had non-JW friends, some very close. If they want to talk about religion we do, if they don't we don't. I figure it's their call.

Sassenach, never bought into the "present understanding" or "present truth" business, at least not completely. To be fair, it's very rarely mentioned, a few times in some of the older publications I think. There is scriptural support for some things apparently being situational but it typically doesn't apply to basic doctrine. I have some questions about the marriage/divorce situation with Israel because they apparently were allowed some lattitude on the basis of their own attitude.

God Changing Chosen Peoples
by eyes_opened inmy huband posed something to me yesterday that i had never even thought of before.
he said, wouldn't it be possible that if a group <ie.
jehovahs witnesses> fell out of gods favor, what would stop him from choosing another group?

Oh man, the Two Witnesses Must Come boys are here. They sure are persistant, I guess it's the Witness background.
By the way, on the name issue. I've seen a pretty good case made several time, most notably in the Biblical Archaeology Review, that it was probably Ye-ho-wah, three syllables. I think the Witness guy that did the computerized linguistic ananlysis came up with something similar, three syllables anyway.

I seem to have missed the whole thing here. From one comment I am getting the idea that smartgirl was disfellowshipped for watching movies! IF that's true then those guys need to be disbarred because that's not grounds folks.
My all time favorite English comedy is keeping up appearances. I find it almost painful to watch, I want to strangle the woman, she's exactly like my mother. )

ianao, since I don't ascribe to the "weed them out" theory I don't feel like I need to defend it. As far as the reduction in numbers goes, I think most of it came from people who came into the organization because they'd had the bejeezus scared out of them and when nothing materialized they went right back out. Of the few that I knew that sold houses, etc. not one of them went out. Most of them seemed to get along quite happily afterward. There was a certain convenient memory loss about their adamancy as to future events but that was about it. I've knocked 1975 pretty hard a few times in public talks and it doesn't seem to bother most people. One or two old duffers tried to give me some grief about it but they backed down pretty quick.
Never thought ignorance was bliss, don't understand the idea to tell the truth. Ignorance is bloody awful in my opinion.

I was there through the whole thing and I certainly disagree with Amicus, larc and others. 99%+ of the Witnesses I knew, and from what I can tell most Witnesses, did not make any changes whatsoever in their lives because of the 1975 stuff. Yes, some sold their houses to pioneer, some passed on medical treatment, and indeed some did run up debt on the assumption they wouldn't have to pay for it, but, the vast majority did not do those things. Education is in my opinion a separate issue and not particularly linked to 1975. The people that really jumped on the 1975 business desperately wanted it to happen then for all kinds of reasons, a lot of them were "escaping." They were not wise or judicious, but no one forced them to do what they did. It's their responsibility, just like the nut cases down at the corner store buying lottery tickets a hundred bucks at a time. Just like someone that's a smoker is responsible for their actions. I get so sick of this lack of personal responsibility, everything is always someone else's fault. It makes me gag. I think I'll go down to McDonalds and see if I can't spill some hot coffee in my lap.

ianao it's simple truth that we all live our lives as we see fit. Others may influence us but unless they've got a gun to our heads then that's the way it is. Some may be more weak willed than others but even if we give up our decision making capabilities to others that is something we choose to do.
Most Witnesses take things from the Society with a grain of salt, they just don't like to admit it.
It wouldn't bother me a bit to say something like "live our lives as WE see fit." I've done it before.

Just to weigh in with Frenchy and Kismet. I have personally attended both funerals and wedding in churches, including Catholic churches, and no one said a thing. Some Witnesses have a particularly weak conscious and they limit themselves unnecessarily.
