To My Fellow Skeptics
by TD inokay...i'm a hardcore skeptic and i admit it.
i have no use for the supernatural at all.. having said that though, once in a great, great while i'm truly, honestly stumped.
one instance was a book i read in the early 1970's entitled, arigo: surgeon of the rusty knife.

What the law says...
by TD in...is not always what the law actually means.. that idea might sound like doublethink at first, but it's a basic principle of every legal system and there are several very valid reasons for this.. first: a simple, mechanical reading of law can run counter to what the law was actually intended to accomplish.
here's a simple example to illustrate this:.
there are certain plants in the american southwest that are protected by law.

Agent Smith's Audi
by TD inin the second movie in the matix trilogy (matrix reloaded) there's a brief scene near the beginning where agents pull up in a black audi.
the license plate is is 5416. isaiah 54:16 "behold, i have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and i have created the waster to destroy.".
---i'm probably the last person in the world to notice that .

Hierarchical or Congregational?
by TD incongregational polity is a system of church governence where each congregation is ecclesiastically autonomous.
many protestant churches are organized this way and one of its advantages is that it protects the parent organization(s) from legal actions originating at the congregational level.
one of it's disadvantages is that a minister in one congregation does not hold that same status in other congregations.

Biology: A (Mostly Fun) Challenge
by TD incan you name this plant?.
the subject of evolution and the question of why one would believe that various living things are so closely related that they sprang from a common ancestor comes up fairly often.
very strong opinions are expressed.. i thought a visual challenge might be fun .

References to Jehovah's Witnesses in Fiction
by TD inreferences to jehovah's witnesses in fictional works are often amusing and sometimes dead on.
i thought it might be fun to share any you may have come across.
most of my topics die a quick and mericful death and this will probably be no exception, so i'm only going to put up one for now:.

Reflections on 42 Years of Apostasy
by TD in....that was the title of a lecture given by sandra tanner in 2002. in the mormon church, ms. tanner is arguably the "grandmother of all apostates.".
"the church is true because it's true".
i feel like satan is laughing.

Okay, What do JW Posers get from this site?
by TD inthere was a person here years ago who claimed to be both an active jw and anointed but did not know who the "domestics" were in the nwt's rendering of matthew 24:45. it's not that i don't understand why people on the internet might claim to be something they're not.
they get a level of recognition that is lacking in real life.
therefore it makes sense that a disaffected jw might claim to hold a position of authority and/or prestige in the jw community that is entirely fictitious.. my question is why do people pull that stunt here when:.

Thought Control (A simple test for JW's)
by TD inin george orwell's novel 'nineteen eighty-four' the capitulation of the principal protagonist is portrayed in his willingness to assent to the proposition that two and two make five.
once he had denied objective reality, his mental conquest was complete and he was no longer truly the master of his own mind.
nineteen eighty-four is in many ways, a very depressing read.. a charge commonly leveled at jehovah's witnesses is that the type of mind control envisioned by orwell has been and continues to be used on them.
