Your enthusiasm is commendable, sf. You do a lot of good. But you really need to learn the difference between credible and incredible material. Just the way that excerpt was written you could tell it wasn't true. Just the wording alone undermined the argument.

I *witnessed* to the *Christians* last night--LOL!
by LDH inthought you all would enjoy this.. i went to a b'day party for a friend who is a bible-thumper in the worst way!
(10x worse than most jw).. i'm sitting around like a zombie while everyone is talking about how "blessed" they are to "know christ" blah blah blah blah blah.. then my interest got peaked as one of the women started quoting scripture talking about how the reason her life is blessed is that her great great grandmother was a russian mennonite blah blah blah and the bible says that god will bless your offspring if you come to know him.
blah blah blah.. so i start asking a few well placed questions like "well what does that mean for the poor muslim sop whose great great grandmother was a muslim?

God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked and unbeliever, but by God's foreknowledge it is a simple fact that many will reject the truth, thinking that they can go their own way to be saved. God cannot help those who reject Him and will not listen. So He gives them up the the path which they alone have chosen to follow. God does not condemn them; THEY CONDEMN THEMSELVES.
I know. Translation, once again: Do what I say and no one gets hurt.
It's really that simple. As you, yourself, just confirmed by the above.

Theif gets 200yrs......only in the USA!
by ISP inyeah 200 yrs sounds a tad excessive..................but things are bigger and better in the us.....i guess it works for sentences as well.. sacramento, calif. (ap) -- a man who used tiger woods' identity to steal $17,000 worth of goods was sentenced to 200 years-to-life in prison.
anthony lemar taylor was convicted of falsely obtaining a driver's license using the name eldrick t. woods, woods' social security number and his birth date.
though he looks nothing like golf's best player, the 30-year-old taylor then used the false identification and credit cards to buy a 70-inch tv, stereos and a used luxury car between august 1998 and august 1999. .

You believe in just slapping hands and not kicking ass. That's why your soccer games are full of idiots wrecking the stadiums, and your old people are being robbed by teenagers with ballbats.
Roamingfeline, I must disagree. There are cultural reasons for the 'lad' culture in England, and it has nothing to do with lax punishment. So your explanation for the soccer fans causing damage is not the real reason.
Besides, here the in the good ol' butt-kicking, gun-toting, three-strikes-and-yer-out USA, we have riots after many sports championships, with cars being set on fire, people being arrested, etc. It doesn't happen at soccer games because we don't care about soccer the way England does. But something we do care about? Set that car on fire!
As for old people being robbed by teens (regardless of their weapon of choice), do you really think that doesn't happen in this country in the big cities, and probably at a rate higher than in England's?

It is true that, by God's will (though not His desire) many will choose death over life, many will reject Jesus as Lord. They do this to the expense of their eternal life, believing they are right and God is wrong.

Tally,
We've tangled in the past, and I don't much care for your tone most of the time. But that's ok, you probably don't care for my tone. What's the difference?
But I was moved by your story, and I feel for you very strongly. I remember when this happened, and although I was never in the loop that knew the details at the time, I knew one thing: A man is innocent until proven guilty, and I always, always try to remember that. In your case, I assumed I didn't have the whole story, and I withheld judgment. When Farkel then began assuring us on H2O that there was more to the story, and that you would be exonerated, I assumed that to be the case and that you were innocent. That is how it turned out.
I am sorry you carry this burden with you. Again, though we do not see eye to eye on many things, we are on the same side, with the same fight, shoulder to shoulder. You're a good man, Tom Talley.

When things started to "fall off"
by comment ini was thinking about this in several areas today.. 1) district conventions and house-to-house work.
if you were a witness for a long time, you probably remember a time when going to the conventions seemed perfectly "normal" to you: it was absolutely "the thing" to sit in a sports arena all day listening to bible talks and counsel from men in suits.. but at some point, did you ever start to feel like you were participating in a cultural relic, so to speak?.
as in, "here it is, the 1990's, and the society is still using fundamentally the same old format they've been using all century long.

Copernicus,
I saw that same documentary and it was fascinating! You're right, other than the pressure they put on the householder to pay money (and it was a lot of money for back then), it was exactly the same as JWs.
As for this topic, here's a suggestion for the WTS that is so simple, and so obvious, the fact that they don't do it is something that totally condemns their motives. You've talked about having TV shows, and they like to avoid that for the connotation is would give the WTS -- might confuse them with those evil televangelists, don't you know!
But what about this idea: They have an official web site. They put selected literature on that web site. So why not put the latest Watchtower and Awake up on that site each week?
Is that not an obvious idea? Wouldn't that be a great way to spread their message, even to people in very isolated locations? Don't the friends wish this would happen?
So why hasn't it happened? What possible (legitimate) reason could the Society have for not doing this? Don't they want to let their light shine? Is it because they want to keep the literature away from "apostates"? Then why put any literature up there?
No, the fact that this incredibly useful, completely easy, and absolutely logical idea isn't followed tells us only one thing: The WTS wants the magazines to be pushed by the brothers. They depend on that money, and would be afraid that if they posted the magazines on their own web site many friends would stop subscribing, many householders would say, "oh, I'll just read them online," and so forth.
They need money more than they care about spreading their message. I can think of no more obvious example of that than this.

Escaped with my life!
by truman ini wanted to give an update to all those who kindly offered suggestions on how to deal with my jw son's ultimatum' "go tell the elders, or i will".. these last few days have been an intense crash course in life for me.
having experienced my firstborn son, whom i gave birth to, wiped his behind, dried his tears, and helped to grow to adulthood with loving support, threaten to turn me over to the "authorities" (elders) for wrong thinking and wrong speech, has been a deeply disturbing experience.
learning the truth about the "truth" was shocking, but this is just a crying tragedy.. after he found a short email from a board friend, which inadvertantly got into our regular email box instead of my private one, i was given a week to go to the elders.

Truman,
It's sounds as if you handled things perfectly. It's not easy to walk that fine line, but you're off to a good start. Just stick to your story no matter what, and there will be little they can do other than be suspicious.
As for your son's attitude, I hope you can realize that he really does love you. As harsh as his actions were, in their own warped manner they were designed to help you in the only way he thinks is possible. The bond between parent and child is still there regardless, and I hope you can break through that suspicion enough to have a good relationship despite this difference of opinion on how life should be. Remember, he's only doing what he believes must be done, and not because he wants to treat you badly. He is as deceived as we all were. I'm as warm-hearted as they come, and yet a few years ago I could see myself doing the exact same thing as your son -- a thought that makes me shudder now, but one that is realistic, sadly enough.
