Xena: Humor goes both ways. I've met plenty of women that laugh at my jokes. Very few of them could make me laugh with their jokes. It's one thing to have a sense of humor that appreciate hearing humor. It's quite another to have the wit and intelligence to create jokes in return. When I see a woman that can do that it is so startling to me that I notice it immediately.

Here is what I am looking for:
Intelligence. No, really, intelligence to the nth-degree. I'll keep up, if need be. I want someone who can look at a commercial and tell me what's wrong with it. Someone who can hear a speech and noted the inconsistencies. Someone who will seek out in-depth reading material and can't wait to tell me what she's read.
Humor. Funny, funny, funny. Must love to laugh, and make me laugh. Witty, insightful, loves word play.
Loyal. Must be willing to go to the bitter end for a friend in need. Someone who will look out for my needs while I look out for hers.
Sexual. Comfortable with their bodies and knows how hers works and will guide me in the best way to make love to her without hangups or shame.
Independent. Someone who knows not to follow the crowd but can make decisions on their own merit even if it means everyone else is wrong and she is right.
Mentally and emotionally stable. In touch with her past and understands why she acts the way she does. Has learned to overcome childhood patterns that are destructive.
Everything else is negotiable, including all the usual silly reasons such as looks, financial status, and so on.
i feel that the evidence is pretty substantial, that points to evolution as to why we have so many forms of life, if you do examine it with an open mind.. so i ask:.
does a scientist loss some of his credence if he does not believe that evoltion took place?
i'm a christian and i believe in evolution.. i think to be open minded is a good thing.

It's a quirk of such online discussions between relative strangers that we think we don't get along with some folks. I'll bet if you and I met over coffee, we'd get along just great.

One point I find interesting that hasn't been commented on is how the Society's teachings on this subject made Lari write "self-pleasuring" and "getting yourself off" instead of "masturbation." That use of euphemisms is itself a telling sign of the guilt that is put on this subject.

I'm glad to see you continuing on your journey on this subject. You ask a good question. I know scientists who believe in God with no loss of credibility, for science does not really dwell on that subject. But evolution has been shown to be true to such a degree that yes, I think it would reflect badly on a scientist who didn't accept evolution. It's not quite this dire, but it would be something like a scientist not accepting the laws of thermodynamics. There are always a few people who want to find loopholes, but the evidence is so strong that to reject it is to be stubborn in the face of scientific fact.
Now, I realize there are a bunch of people who will jump in and say that they don't accept evolution and they don't agree with my take on the subject. But the point of the thread is how a scientist would think, not what you or I would think. People trained in science would understand just how powerful the evidence in favor of evolution is. Someone who rejected it would be viewed as someone who allows their personal prejudices to blind them to scientific reality. This is something that non-scientists do routinely, of course, but a scientist shouldn't.

Difficult to believe gangs could rape men? I thought that was old news, the prisons are full of gang rape and that sort of abuse. Also, back in the 1970's, homosexuals didn't have the reputation for being civil and monogamous that is portrayed by the gay movement today. New York was considered a sexual jungle back then. Sorry I'm blurting all of this out and not sugar-coating it.
We're not talking about prison, but the streets of Brooklyn Heights where if a rape occurred, any rape, it would make major headlines. There were occasionally rapes of women there, which I heard about, but I never heard of a rape of a man by "roving gangs of homosexuals." Here is what happened: your friend must have been just as homophobic as you are, Rick, and because there are many homosexuals in Brooklyn Heights, he probably projected his fears onto them. He probably assumed that there were gangs out to get him if he wasn't careful. This is a laughable idea if you understand human nature. But if you and your friend want to curse the idea of homosexuality by your prejudicial remarks, I guess you can believe the stories you pass back and forth between each other instead of common sense.
I'm telling you your friend was wrong. His imagination went wild, as yours is wont to do.

I have no intention of getting involved in this discussion other than to address two things, one to Julie, and one to everyone else:
TO EVERYONE ELSE: Julie knows more about JW life than some long-time JWs. I'm constantly forgetting that she was never one herself. There is no way her opinions would have changed about things had she been a JW for twenty years. Sometimes I think she was anyway.
TO JULIE: I've been there, my friend. There is something about online arguments that lends itself to this sort of thread. Perhaps the easy access to precise words, while simultaneously allowing for misunderstood words with the emotional context removed. In any case, certain types of discussions are no-win situations. I tried for years to figure out a way to solve these types of threads. I never could find it, and finally decided to just steer clear of them. I suggest this course of action for you in the future. Friendly advice from a friend. You can't please everyone, and sometimes there will be people who will take a disliking to you without any rational reason. There is no way to avoid this completely, so the best course is to accept this truism and move on in life.
