Yeah, Jan, if most Americans could raise their eyes enough to see how the rest of the world thinks, the old myth of the liberal media would die a deserved death fast. The American media is so conservative to the rest of the world as to be laughable to hear people muttering about 'liberals' everywhere. There is virtually no voice for liberals in the U.S., not in the real sense of the word.

Believe me, I've thought of it. Between my intellectualism that goes over like a lead balloon here, or my independent political thought that doesn't conform to any of the accepted 'teams,' or my dislike of American religious extremism, or my views toward personal appearance, I just belong in Europe. I love America, but I seem to be one of the few left who do. Many other persons are only too happy to throw away the constitution while waving the flag mindlessly as they swallow the propaganda of the day while smugly thinking they are being a good American.TR
Basically, I just don't belong here anymore. If it wasn't so hard to emigrate while getting a job in the new country, I'd be long gone. Of course, who am I kidding? I am such a non-conformist, I don't belong anywhere.

Please don't take what I said personally, for it's not meant toward you. It's toward all of humanity that is subjected to the forces of propaganda.
Read earlier in this thread to the answer to your question, about how I am clean shaven, and how this is a very silly thing to do. But I do it anyway, and understand perfectly why you shave your legs. Remember, I did point out that you might have come to this idea on your own, without any outside influence. But considering that we are all taught, from birth, that women should shave their legs, it becomes hard to know what the source of the idea for each of us was. Learned or taught?

Of course you have been influenced in your tastes by societal pressures. So have I. We all have. From birth onward, we are all bombarded by images and thoughts designed to change the way we think about certain things. It is so pervasive, it influences us even when we are aware of the process. You are no exception to humanity. As I said, if from birth onward society said it was totally sexy to shave the left side of your head totally, you would now be telling me how much you love shaving your head and how it was entirely your desire to do so without anyone telling you. That's how pervasive this societal pressure is on all of us.
Now, I'm not saying you would never have come to your position on your own, had society never pushed the idea in the first place. But I'll bet if you never heard of anyone shaving their legs, and society put forth images objectifying hairy legs on women, you (and I) would be thinking how nice and smooth it feels to have luxurious hair all over your legs. And you would probably defend this choice should anyone oddly suggest that shaving your legs was a better choice. You would probably argue with him that you chose to let your leg hair grow because you honestly like the way it feels.
Of course, I don't know you personally, and your reactions might very well surprise me if I did know you, and I'm not trying to pick you out for any reason. What I said above applies to every last one of us, me included. We have all been taught by advertisers who are masters of manipulation. I'm not even sure I can imagine what beliefs of mine would change if I had never, ever been exposed to this manipulation. I would probably be different in surprising ways, as would we all. So again, my comments are not meant personally toward you, but toward humanity in general.

Hey Dana,
I'm fine, thanks. Don't worry, I'll never do the combover. I'm not that far gone, actually, to where I would be tempted to do it. But I promise, when that day comes, I won't succumb. I am proud of who I am, and quite comfortable with my genetic gifts (good and bad). It's me, and if anyone doesn't want to accept that, it's their problem not mine. :)

An excellent question, and one that gets to the heart of my personal objection. It's arbitrary. Society sets a standard and expects women to march in lockstep behind it. Let me put it this way: What if society set a universal standard that you should shave half the hair on your head. If you didn't do this, you would be looked down upon or thought of as weird. What would happen? Right. You'd have women in this thread talking about how much they enjoy having half a shaved head, how smooth it feels, what they use, etc.
It's all arbitrary. Society said shave the legs, but not the arms, but yes, do the armpits! Absurd.
Now, if this is truly your preference, go right ahead. After all, I tried the beard and moustache thing, found I didn't care for the look as much as smooth shaven, so I shave my face. A perfectly silly thing to do, but it's become what I am accustomed to. I certainly understand why women shave their legs. And my objection is not so much aesthetic, as it is intellectual. I don't understand the arbitrary nature by which society sets standards for women. Yet one more way women are mistreated, though it's a very subtle way.

I don't insist on my personal taste for any women. I'm perfectly aware that we have all been propagandized (yes, all, me too) to think women should not have hair on their legs even though that's how we all are thanks to biology. I feel the effects of the societal propaganda that objectifies women to the point of distraction, and I like a smooth leg too. But my preference, personal only, and nobody ever agrees with me on this, nobody, and that's fine with me, is for the natural look. If you are naturally smooth, great. My next preference is for the unshaved look. My last preference is for the shaved look.
Yes, shaving creates a look that is distinct. If you must shave, please don't go above the knee. It looks really ugly on the thighs when you shave.
One day we may get to the point where humanity accepts itself for who they are as biological individuals. Until then, we will continue to be bombarded with propaganda so relentlessly, we will come to think of it as our personal preference.
Yes, I practice what I preach: I'm going bald, and I am not, and will not, do the slightest thing about it. I am what I am, and I only alter things if they cause a hindrance to daily living, such as contacts or glasses.
Now that I've made my standard rant, go ahead and disagree completely. Everyone always does on this subject.

Blackjack is supposed to have the best payout, and if you follow the rules you have a reasonable chance to do OK. But it requires more work than the random slot machines or roulette wheel.
