  Why do Jehovah's Witnesses lie to recruits?

  first let me say this.. i have constantly been hearing of the legendary honesty/intergity of the jehovah's witness for some time now.

  i have also been informed that they are the happiest people on the entire earth.. my problem is this:.

  when a jehovah's witness comes to your door and you actually decide to give them a few moments of your time they never give the whole story as to what you would be getting involved with when you join the watchtower.. case in point.

  I've been out of the Jdub loop for about 25 years, so I really don't know how much they talk about it now. When I was active, it was discussed, but not in the light as they really use it. We heard many discussions of it being used in countries that the work was banned and how they used it to get out from being caught. But, the way they really use it and the way they try to tell people it is used is very much different. Heck they use it against their own R/F now, the example of the UN fiasco is a good one. I think there is a section on the JW quotes website that has some quotes about theocratic warfare, form the literature.

  When I was an active Jdub, I seldom was able to do any converting, mostly becasue I never did the "Theocratic warfare" bit. I was raised as a JW, and my parents taught me to be honest and not lie, they were really sort of different Jdub parents. If someone asked me about the shunning I would tell them that yes we do shun those that have done wrongs or left, simple as that. I would get som e pretty strange reactions, but I would expline that it was due to them turning their back on Jehovah, although now I know that is not what it is, it is turning their backs on the WTS. The shunning and dishonesty is what really made me sick of the B-org, I just couldn't understand why they would shun someone when they were in their lowest time of life, to lose the only support medium that they have, their friends and relitives. I have been DF'd now for about 20 years, I have never been shunned by my parents, Jdub friends yes, but not family. Case in point, I now live in Guam, 180 degrees around the world from my family, but my mother always askes me to call her on a regualr basis. When I went back to the States on vacation last year we had a family reunion and even my one sister that is still an active Jdub came to the BBQ, talked with me and associated with me. We went to my mother's apartment and visited with her s few times, she welcomed and infact invited me ot come over.

  I guess I'm getting a little off topic LOL. But, this whole shunning bit and theocratic warfare was really the Biggest reason I left, I just couldn't buy it.

  has anyone looked into this practice?

  it looks to me like a cult based on buddisem.

  as i was driving away from the airport a couple of days ago, i noticed a bunch of asian folks getting out of about 4 cars with these bright yellow t-shirts on.

  Yes gsx1138, the Falun gong/dafa is suppose to be based on Qi gong, at least that is what they say in their literature, and this group is also outlawed in China. The founder ran from China to escape prosicution and came here to Guam, was picked up by the INS at the airport. He couldn't get out of the airport and was just hangiong around for hours until they found him out, they had no idea who he really was as he was traveling under a forged passport. About 9 months later the discovered who he was and then all hell broke lose, and he requested asillm (spelling?). He is now suppose to be somewhere on the east coast of the US.

  pulling over from another thread.... i'm curious how many have dabbled in witchcraft/spiritism after leaving the jws.

  or, perhaps, before joining.. i'm curious what experiences have been had.

  I myself studied Wicca for a while, but the only problem I had with it is that it is too Dieity based, not that, that is bad but it was for me, I have a problem with accepting a dieity, I prefer for myself to look at only energy, a universal power. Someone posted a thread about Pantheisem, which actually described myself almost to a tee, the link seems to be down now, but it was great info. I think many pagans are actually panthiests, as long as you do not look at a dieity as a literal being, but only as a representation of universal energy. The native Americans and such were actually Pantheists, as are most buddists and Hindus (Even though most Hindus are suppose to have many gods they really do not, to a Hindu all is Brahman and Brahman is all, there are some that consider them the first monotheists).

  And I have to agree this has been a very interesting and friendly thread.

  Hi LDH,

  Yeah as I read through their little booklet I have here, it sounded like a JW, cultish thing all over again. I was not impressed. I guess the difference is these guys want to controll not only your thinking but you excersizes too LOL.

  Proof of the "historical" Jesus...

  been wondering about this lately.... what proof (outside the bible, of course) do we have for the "historical jesus"?.

  in my earlier days (post jw to "born again christian") i remember reading that the one thing that differentiates christianity vs. "all the others" was that we had secular historical proof that there was a man that was called jesus, who died on a cross and was resurrected.

  now i am wondering just what that proof is/was?

  No I do not have the faith I was refering to, as that Jesus existed. I find just baseing what I beleive solely on faith is a very weak foundation, I do not mean that derogatoraly, because most people that I know are christian and really know nothing about their own religon. My wife being one of them. However you and quite a number of others here have made an effort to understand their faith, which I feel is great.

  No, I also do not desire to have a faith in the bible, it's God/s (depending on how you look at it). I research religons as a hobby, not as a faith, I do so becasue it ties in with the history of mans development and a study of one without the other is really fruitless.

  As I was driving away from the Airport a couple of days ago, I noticed a bunch of Asian folks getting out of about 4 cars with these bright yellow t-shirts on. As I tried to read them I noticed that the one word I could make out was Falun. Hmmmm I wonder why they were here. The leader of the movement was caught here trying to enter the USA illeagly, and was held in the territorial lock up for almost a year, until they could work out what they could do with him as he is wanted in China.

  how often are these elders supposed to come visit anyway?

  it's been a long while since we had any elder come to our house... sure, we had some "brothers and sisters" come by to either use the bathroom while in the service or just say hi, but an elder?

  it's been at least a year.. are these guys getting lazy?

  Hmmm let me see............. I think the last time I had any communication with an elder was well over 20 years ago when I wrote a letter to them saying what they could do with their Kangaroo court, if they were not going to pay my expences to drive the 300+ miles to attend it. (I really didn't want to go anyhow)

  Although there are those that would scoff at the idea that the mind can channel energy and that levitation, comunication with the spirit realm, out of body expierences, and the like. I would like to address a REAL life quandry to these abilities.

  Have any of you ever heard of the Coral Castle? This place is a mystery of modern day simular to the pyrimids, the statues on Easter island, the man made island in Ponepae, Micronesia and the like.

  The story goes that this little man from eastern Euorpe bulit it, in around the 1920's, with no help. He had no craine no mechanical equipment that in any way could life a 30 ton rock. How did he do it?? Nobody ever really saw him working, some tried to spy on him yet he always seemed to know of their presence, HOW?
