Funny WT quote on blood transfusion = murder
by Splash in*** w50 5/15 p. 159 letter ***.
it is freely acknowledged that the fluid from a person of one type of blood may kill a person of another type of blood.
if, now, you donated your blood, and your type of blood killed the person receiving the transfusion, would you be guilty of murder?

*** w50 5/15 p. 159 Letter ***
It is freely acknowledged that the fluid from a person of one type of blood may kill a person of another type of blood. If, now, you donated your blood, and your type of blood killed the person receiving the transfusion, would you be guilty of murder? Or would the doctor or nurse that administered the transfusion be guilty of the murder? Would you not be at least an accessory to a murder?
No court anywhere would make a blood donor legally responsible for the death of the recipient of a blood transfusion, let alone murder.
An exception might be in the case of HIV or Hepatitis, where an infected individual knowingly donates their tainted blood, hoping to create a maelstrom of chaos in the blood donor system. It is a criminal offense in Canada to knowingly attempt to infect a sexual partner with HIV or hepatitis, especially if you do not inform them of your positive STI status.
When you are hospitalized and in need of a blood transfusion, you are now required to sign a specific consent form stating that you understand the risks and benefits that have been explained to you by the physician. You assume liability for your choice to accept or refuse a blood transfusion. This does not absolve the hospital, its physicians or nurses from negligence or malpractice.
In the case of an emergency, Universal Donor blood (Type O Negative) is always given, as it is the safest to use when time is of the essence. A person who is unconscious and has no medical directive to the contrary (no blood card, DNR, etc.) is assumed to want their life saved by whatever means possible. That is a basic tenet of laws relating to medical care.
Donor blood goes through so much screening and preparation before it is administered to a patient - it is safer than it has ever been since transfusions have been used in medical practice. People who are HIV positive or who have a host of other medical conditions are denied the privilege of donating blood.
The statement in the WT from the 50s is clearly trying to scare people away from being blood donors, by making them feel that they would be "bloodguilty" for any negative outcome from the use of their blood.

In the course of doing my job, I am required to maintain silence on confidential matters. These can be related to direct patient care as well as to hospital policies.
I don't consider it being deceptive when I tell someone "I am not at liberty to discuss that with you", even though the person asking the question may consider it to be deceptive or hiding truthful information from them.
I've had parents of a patient ask me about other babies in the nursery, and I've had to remind them about the Confidentiality Agreement that they sign when they first arrive in our NICU. One guy got really offended and gave me a look that could kill, and I just said, "You really should be paying attention to YOUR baby, and not the other babies. Any time you are asking about other babies, you aren't focused on your baby, and that isn't what your visit should be about." He claimed he was just making conversation with us, and I informed him that "making conversation" isn't part of my job, unless it specifically relates to his child, and that "making conversation" about other patients is none of his business.
I'm not usually the mean nurse, btw. But some assholes people just need to be put in their place.

Loved how the two old biddies walked out in the middle of it.
No, it didn't happen at a Kingdom Hall. The OP is a Liar Liar Pants on Fire.
I doubt one ever would happen at a KH, because if it did, there would be a Local Needs Talk™ denouncing the practice ASAP, as well as a notice in the Kingdom Ministry™ and at the District Conventions™ saying how it is not befitting True Christians™.

Turning Pascal's Wager against them
by Scully inmany of you are probably aware of the concept of pascal's wager.. it posits that humans all bet with their lives either that god exists or does not exist.
given the possibility that god actually does exist and assuming the infinite gain or loss associated with belief in god or with unbelief, a rational person should live as though god exists and seek to believe in god.
if god does not actually exist, such a person will have only a finite loss (some pleasures, luxury, etc.).

I wonder if we could turn that concept around on JWs who try to emotionally blackmail us into returning to the WTS. For example:
The WTS is either right or wrong. JWs "bet" on the likelihood that the WTS is correct, and in so doing, are required to forfeit the life they could have now (pleasures, luxury, career, family relationships, education) and put their human potential and desires "on hold" until the WTS's promises are fulfilled in the undisclosed future (i.e., Soon™).
Having discovered numerous errors and falsehoods within WTS doctrine, we choose to "bet" on the alternate side of the argument: we choose to fulfill the goals and potential we have for career, family, education, wealth in the present, because the future is uncertain, other than the certainty that we will eventually die.
Many JWs have lived through at least one failed WTS end-times "prophecy" and are now coming to terms with the eventuality that they will die before the promises they believe in will be fulfilled, in fact, WTS is telling them that this is a likely scenario. Many elderly JWs are also coming to terms with the fact that having put those goals "on hold" they are unprepared for life in their golden years. How many JWs quit their jobs to Pioneer™ and are now facing their 60s and 70s without a pension or retirement savings? How many sold their homes to Serve Where The Need Is Greater™, and now have no home of their own to live out their golden years? How many of these people, who FOOLISHLY gave up most of their material comforts and stopped preparing for a future in This Old System Of Things™, are now relying on US to help them make ends meet?
Life is about choices. We choose to live in the here and now, while preparing for a future in this world. JWs set those cares aside and choose to live for the WTS and a pie-in-the-sky promise to Live Forever In Paradise On Earth™. They are betting on something that sounds too good to be true, and it really is too good to be true. We are betting conservatively, betting on a sure thing - that we will get old and die before any so-called promises from the WTS come to pass. Who is really making the wise choice, here?
It looks to me as though we are the ones who "chose wisely", while they "chose poorly" (props to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade).

Flood insurance and cover for overland flooding
by Simon inwith the huge floods in alberta the news now is starting to cover the issue of property damange and insurance.. we've never really thought a lot about insurance cover for flooding because it became a big issue in the uk about 5-10 years ago with limited land availability leading to building on flood plains and the eventual inevitable consequences and so when we bought over here we didn't buy anywhere that was a possible flood risk.
our choice seems to have worked out as we've been completely untouched by the recent issues but tragically, others have been less fortunate and apparently few people are covered for 'overland flooding' which is where water enters your house through doors and windows.. it's hard to really know what is fair.
i understand the reason why insurers don't cover it and the arguments on both sides.. one one hand, we included the flood risk when puchasing a home.

how do tax payers benefit when the house next to the creek rises in value because of the picturesque location?
Well property value takes into consideration the actual history of the property, which, if it included a major flood, fire, earthquake or other natural disaster, is supposed to be disclosed when the property goes on the market. Such insults to the property have the potential to cause unseen structural damages to the house that are not fixed along with the cosmetic repairs. Things like warped beams and joists, mold and so on.
In other words, those homes that have suffered damages or are in the areas where other homes have been damaged, would also take a hit in property value, which would take a long time to recover from, regardless of how nice the location is. Buyers tend to be a lot more educated in terms of what they are looking for in a home, and try to do their due diligence and learn about the neighbourhood where they are planning to buy. They are also demanding home inspections before signing on the dotted line to make what is likely one of their biggest investments ever.
We had a new development in our area about 10 years ago, shortly after we bought our home. What I knew from having lived in this part of Ottawa for almost 15 years was that the new development was being built on marshland that had been filled in. Sure enough, there was a problem within 3 to 5 years where peoples' homes were sinking, requiring major excavation and installation of 'floats' under the foundations. People were displaced from their homes for weeks while the New Home Warranty repairs were carried out. Despite the repairs and reassurances from engineers that the homes are fixed and that there should be no further problems, values of the affected homes are impacted compared to unaffected homes in the same development, and in some cases on the same street. It doesn't change what the homeowners had to pay for the property when it was purchased, but it will impact resale values. Now more than ever, when people are buying a home and they see a house with a spectacularly reduced price compared to others in the neighbourhood, they are suspicious, and rightly so.
You asked how taxpayers benefit when property values increase in a desirable location. I should think that these properties carry a higher property tax based on the value of the property and the house that sits on the property. Perhaps that is a topic that could be addressed at the city council level, because homes that were impacted by the flooding certainly (and rightly) required more city resources in the wake of the disaster, while other locations that weren't affected may have had increased wait times for emergency services (fire, police, ambulance) that were tied up while tending to flood victims.

DFing and shunning causes 22-yr old to murder friend
by Scully inso i was randomly watching a show on investigation discovery today - the show was called killer next door, and the episode was called murder without motive.. the show is a french-canadian program that has been translated into english, and this particular episode had to do with a homicide that took place in ste-croix-de-lotbiniere, near quebec city, in november 1999 of a young man named victor lemay.. the confessed murderer was his friend, andre roy, then aged 22.. in the year or so that preceded the murder, andre roy had been disfellowshipped from the jws and had, as a result, been kicked out of his parents' home.
he had no social support outside of the jws and had to start making new friends.
the psychologists on the program felt very strongly that the shunning he experienced by the jws in general, and his family in particular, contributed to increasing rage, and that his friend, victor, became a convenient outlet for his rage.

Hi Nathan
It was a very happy day, indeed, when The Supreme Court of Canada declared that a child's fundamental right to life trumps his/her parents' religious beliefs that would deny the child a life-saving blood transfusion (or other medical treatment that offends their religious sensibilities).
Now if only we could get certain Muslims to stop the effing "honour" killings of their wives/daughters.

I didn't know that about the WTS's use of the name "André" - so I guess when they say "names changed", that's another lie too, huh??
Mind you, it's been a while since I picked up a WT or Awake, and actually read it.
