A FORMER Jehovah's Witness elder who apologised to his alleged victim on Facebook has been charged with two counts of indecent assault. Richard Hill will appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate's Court on March 1 over allegations that he sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl in 1981.

The victim, now 38, told Fairfax Media that Mr Hill did everything except penetrate her - ''he tried, but couldn't manage''.

She said she ''did not realise the gravity'' of what had happened until she was about 14.

At that point she told her mother, who could not act because of a Jehovah's Witness rule that allegations of sexual abuse would only be acted on if two elders witnessed it, she said.

Much later, the victim confronted Mr Hill on Facebook. ''He turned around and apologised,'' she said. ''He became an elder within the church and rose quite high up. Since he was charged, he has stepped down.''

The Victorian inquiry into how churches handled complaints of child sex abuse heard from two former Jehovah's Witnesses on Monday, who say they have been ostracised by the church.

Fairfax Media reported on Monday that the child was one of four who clubbed together their pocket money to raise the $69.70 needed to launch a prosecution against the church over its alleged refusal to get working-with-children checks.

A former Jehovah's Witness elder recently convicted of child sex offences is back working with children from a Melbourne parish run by his father-in-law.

Richard Hill was found guilty last year of the offences against his six-year-old female cousin, who was also in the religion. He was put on the sex offenders' list and fined. The offences happened in 1981 when he was 20.

Hill, a roofing plumber of Doreen with an office in Brunswick, this week maintained his innocence and confirmed he was working with children while doorknocking as part of the Jehovah's Witnesses religious practice called 'proselytizing.'

His wife's father, Ken Hall, is the senior elder at the Plenty Kingdom Hall in outer Melbourne, where Hill now worships. "I am allowed to attend under strict conditions," Hill said. "The police know about that."

Hill appealed his conviction but then dropped the appeal.

"I pleaded not guilty to all charges but we decided not to keep going because of mental stress on my family and the costs – I spent over $100,000 defending myself in the courts. You get to a point where you turn the other cheek and walk away. I am definitely not guilty. It comes down to one man's opinion over another person's opinion."

However he apologised to his victim, Melissa Buchanan, on social media, as she was preparing to tell police what had happened to her as a little girl. "I'm truly sorry Melissa," he told her in a Facebook message. "I know you must be hurt and I'm so sorry for that. Trust is very hard to earn but easy to destroy."

Ms Buchanan, 41, who is no longer in the sect, told police Hill was living in her family home in the northern suburbs in the 1980's and one night after a shower he came into her bedroom dressed only in a small yellow towel and after making her sit on his lap sexually abused her while telling her to be quiet.

Her family, she says, all staunch Jehovah's Witnesses, hushed it up to save face and the church's reputation, and Hill later became an elder.

"He could very easily do to others what he did to me," she says. "I don't know how they can have a convicted paedophile knocking on doors speaking about religion. I just want him to know that I will never forget."

Late last year the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses To Child Sexual Abuse heard shocking revelations about the Jehovah's Witnesses in Australia, including that 1006 allegations of child sexual abuse had been lodged with church hierarchy since 1950 but none had been reported to police.

It also heard the organisation still receives three to four complaints a month.

The religion's Australian lawyer – and core member – Vincent Toole did not respond to questions from Fairfax Media this week. Victorian Jehovah's Witnesses – estimated at about 10,000 from 66,000 Australia-wide – began gathering at the isolated Melton Assembly Hall on Friday for their annual convention. Two elderly directors of the Australian governing body – the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Australia – recently stepped down. One is aged 93, the other 89.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe they have God's messages from certain sections of the Bible to themselves and that only they will survive the apocalypse. They have predicted the end of the world five times. They also believe Satan has ruled the earth since 1914.

The sect has a policy of "shunning" members who left or wanted to leave by cutting them off from family members who remained.

Keep in mind it is not a research article but an essay despite who the author is.

OK. Found the article. It has only recently been published on the internet and has a date of publishing of 17 May 2016. Prior it was only available of microfiche.

Unfortunately the publisher, Taylor & Francis, have only included page 92 for free. If I get some spare time later I will chase up the other pages as I have account access but it is not registering at the moment.

Elder story:

Many years ago, in a congregation far, far away, an elder goes to the door while I wait in the car with the rest of the group in the driveway. It was rural witnessing. A small chihuahua comes yapping around the corner. Elder goes to scare the dog by raising his foot and stomping on the ground. Only problem is that the dog darts under the foot as it comes down. Snaps the dog's neck killing it instantly. The door starts to open and the elder panics. He picks up the dead dog and puts it in his witnessing bag. The householder, unaware, enters into an enthusiastic discussion. Elder reaches into his bag to get his Bible. I'm not sure exactly what happened in what order as it all went so fast. Elder grabs hold of dead dog that he forgot about. Screams in fright. Drops bag and dead dog tumbles out. Householder screams. I lose it laughing my head off. Brother driving the car turns to tell me off and accidently presses horn on steering wheel. I completely lose it and double up in laughter. Congregation buys householder new pedigree chihuahua. Experience does not make it to convention program.

Got my JC cancelled... (at least for now)

so my wife and i have been in the process of fading for a few months now as per my original post here.

about a week ago, i was browsing some ex-jw facebook groups when i saw a post that linked to the crisis of conscience book.

i said "f@(k it" and hit share on it.. a few hours later, i get a long text letter from my mom (who was a fb friend of mine) telling me the typical "good luck finding friends in the world" and how we have "nothing in common anymore"; basically, it was a 'farewell' text.

You could always countercharge them with apostasy in that they are going against the scriptures, as interpreted by the fds, in that scriptural-based procedures are not being followed.

That's right folks. The JW governing body will take your ice-cream money, even though you are poor, and they will also try to take your inheritance money, the more costly offering made by your dying JW relatives.
