Well, after thinking about all the bad experiences, I just wanted to know, did you know any GOOD elders, and what were they like? Probably unconventional, right? Here is my example:
One of the only elders I knew that I truly thought was a wonderful person is my father. I really do feel that perhaps if all elders were like him, then the organization would not be intolerable. He didn't grow up a witness, so I think maybe that is why he was so down to earth. He also had a lot of experience. He is a very smart man, not one of the more logical (my mom plays that role) but very compassionate, empathetic and caring. He is also egalitarian in the way he interacts when women and my mother. They truly are equals even though they still preach the "headship" crap...I guess they are hypocrites in that area. I always remember my parents having discussions about the treatment of women in foriegn lands and that my father would be upset about how a woman he worked with was very qualified but would get discriminated against by male workers. I think having a strong wife (my mom) and 3 daughters helped out that way in his feelings. My father has been somewhat quite to me but I did not blame him...the congregation put extra pressure on him. However, he has gotten over that lately, by helping me out, and we talk a lot on the phone lately.
When the molestation cases were in the news a lot, it hurt my conscience about my father being an elder and perhaps might be involved in cover ups...I would not beleive that he would do that. So I had to ask him about it. I know my father would not cover up molestation cases because of something he had told me. He worked on a case with this couple who had been both recently baptized. Well then also just had a baby and aparently, the other family members who were not family members wanted the baby taken away from the couple because they claimed the father abused the baby. My father (and a couple other elders) stood by the couple initially. The wife claimed that the other family members were bitter and hated JW's and would do anything they could to hurt them, like getting the DFS to take their baby away. Well my father did some more investigation, and I remember him early on stating to me that "someting just wasn't right" and he got an "eerie" feeling about the husband. Turns out that the husband WAS abusine the child. My father was so pissed at the couple, he was so disgusted by the husband, and was so mad that the mother would protect her husband and not the baby. No one backed them at that point and they were disfellowshipped. The only disfellowshipping I have ever known to be a fair one. This is not a case about molestation, but a very disturbing abuse either way. It was my father who had talked to authorities against these people, even before they were disfellowshipped. A little after that, my dad stepped down from being an elder...not sure if this had something to do about it. He is still in good standing though, and I was under the impression that is was the stress that got to him, can't be to sure though. He is a very respected man inside and outside the religion...and he IS deserving of that respect. He also has an incredible hot daughter. ;)
There, thats my dad. -

The bookstudies were always at my house...which made it SO difficult to fake sick!
First one: Attractive young man, when I was really young, I was really good friends with a girl who lived accross the street. And she was the only "worldly" person I could associate with. Her mother was an alcoholic, and her step father was abusive. My parents being the caring people that I know they are deep inside, would let Nicole (my friend) spend the night all the time. She naturally, came to meetings with me. She developed a crush on the bookstudy conductor. Bill was his name. He was a very nice man. He would always talk to us, and never talk down to us like other men did. His wife was wonderful too. They were a fun couple, and seemed to be down to earth and more liberal bunch.
Second one: Murray Mayo. Old as dirt. Very very very sweet man, but considering his age, he was definitely the conservative type. I think he was BORN in elder-way back in the 1700's. hehe. Him and his wife never had children, but he sure seemed to think he knew a lot about raising kids. He would always try to give my older sister dating advice, and he would try to set the young sisters up...but he considered talking on the phone to be dating to. Bless his heart. I miss him. He was sort of anti-semetic though...I didnt care for that. But he was one of those old-timers that was in jail for being a witness way back in the 30's or 40's.
Third one: My father. I love my dad, so I may be biased. I was weary of elders with the exception of a few, and I really thought (and still think) that if all the elders were like my father, then the organization wouldn't be all that bad. He is a hard worker and is a down to earth person that still knows what fun it. I think the congregation I was in was a friendly one that allowed more flexability when it came to allowing people to be more human and themselves (within certian limitations of course). My dad was an interesting conductor...sometimes he would go off on a tangeant and it was funny, he didnt say anything too odd...but the poor guy thought he was a comedian, so he would say things that he thought was so hilarious..and we would all laugh because it was actually quite stupid.
Forth one: My father needed a break due to sickness and stress, so his best friend, another man his age did the study. This guy is also a good man. One of the only elders that truly took an interest in my well being. I have no ill-will towards this guy either. He also thought he was a comedian like my dad...again, people laughed because he said silly things. We always had light-hearted book studies and these people actually made them enjoyable. WOW, I actually had GOOD things to say. :) -

Introducing Myself...
by kyria ini just wanted to introduce myself and share my verbose story.
my name is kyria, i'm 29 years old, originally from the pawtucket/lincoln rhode island congregation in the states.
i found this board yesterday, and am completely blown away by what an amazing place it is.

Kyria: You story is so moving! You are only 2 years older than me but you have lived so much! It is amazing to think of how far we have come. I have the same attitude you have, about becomming successful. They will see how good we both are doing, we showed them, right? I am currently in college trying to work my way into success. I am encouraged by your story, that you dropped out of highschool, but yet you are not giving up and you are doing so well for yourself. It is obvious that you have a wonderful future ahead of you. Another way to think of our backgrounds: it can be looked at as sort of an education. We have pretty much experienced another culture. We as women especially, can empathize with people who are oppressed...it is no doubt that a woman who is a witness has gone through extra hardships mentally, emotionally and a lot of times physically. We know techniques in brainwashing, picking up on things like language and information oppression. I credit this background as a learning experience and certainly helping me be the determined person I am today. Because of my background, I am more determined than ever to show my family that I can be strong and successful as a woman and former Jehovahs Witness. We have not "fallen away" as they would love to have us beleive. Welcome to the board, and I really enjoy all of the posts you have made so far.

How Do You Think A Watchtower Mole Might Act On This Board?
by minimus inat times, we get suspicious that a poster could be a watchtower mole or a person just trying to gather information and present it to bethel.
(i've been accused of that

Why would they want to watch us? Unless this whole board and the WTBS was in a huge legal battle, then maybe I would worry. And if I was in a legal battle with them...I just would not post personal information about myself that would identify me. At this point, since I have no ties with them, I am not leading a "double life" and basically, I have nothing to hide, like a lot of us here, there should be no worries ;)

Elevation to Godesses
by stillajwexelder ini do not wish to hijack minimus's thread on the opposite sex -- but i think women are so wonderful that i think some should be elevated to the status of godesses -especially here on this board -- now i am not against a bit of "false" worship -- so my two nominations are vivamus (wrapped in blue bubblegum) and xena -- possibly stinkypantz -- wot says youz guys?
remember -- we can not elevate all to godess status as that would diminish the status -- otherwise every woman on this board could have the role

((((Badger)))) How many times must I hug you in a day? :) On this board, all the women are so strong and awesome, we are all godesses

Have You Ever Served as an Attendant? Share Your Stories!
by Funchback ini remember being a jw lad (about 10 or 11 years old).
i would be at the circuit assembly and, at around 10:45 am, about 8 brothers would get up, walk slowly up the aisle, glancing at each row of their "section", their lips quivering as they silently count each person, trying to maintain focus as nearly each jw makes eye contact them (even though everyone knew what the attendants were doing!
did i want to grow up to be the president of the united states?

beryl: You are a wonderful person. When I get on my feet again, I want to do the same thing. At some point later down the road, I want to adopt internationally.
