Devil's Playground
by kyria inhas anyone seen the documentary "devil's playground"?
i highly recommend it.
it's about the amish custom of rumspringa, in which children are allowed total freedom for one year when they turn 16. unprepared for the real world, they have a year of debauchery and end up in all kinds of trouble (anybody remember that old jw parable about pulling a rubber band so tightly that when you finally let go it flies across the room?

What to do?
by Valis ini guess i'm having a minimus moment, but two threads today got me thinking.
our dear caspian apparently has some crazy jw sister (i.e.
spiritual sister, not blood relation) that came looking for him today.
-
Prisca
However, the original post had that touch about Caspian being a ladies man - that's the whole part that makes me question it.
Why? I thought Capsian has been acting like a ladies man.

My Body
by StinkyPantz inthere was recently a thread asking whether you'd rather be buried or cremated.
in a way, i think both are selfish.
i am already an organ donor, so i figure, why not donate the rest of my body to medical science?
-
Prisca
I will happily dedicate my body to sex research, if it will further scientific learning in the field.
*tries to resist urge to mention Refiner, sex research and microscopes in the one sentence* -

Well Mike, I'm gonna tell ya even if you don't want to know
"Lou Carpenter" is a character played on the soapie "Neighbours", which is screened every night here in Australia, and is also immensely popular in the UK.
There is a bit of a resemblance between the actor playing him:

Did anyone see The Guardian last night? (they showed a WT mag)
by Mulan inmy jw girlfriend called me this morning to tell me she watched "the guardian" last night and there was a hospital scene where the main character brought the patient a magazine.
she opened it and said "oh, you brought me a watchtower".
then they talked about how she was going to die and would see her baby soon, which my friend took for their alluding to the resurrection.. .

"The Guardian" is one of few tv shows I like to watch - and Aussie hunk Simon Baker isn't too hard on the eyes either!
The show isn't screening at the moment over here, but I'll keep an eye out for that episode when the show returns.

Humourous, yet interesting questions
by RAYZORBLADE intime to crack the stuffiness out of ourselves today.
well...let's say, everyday.. i'm going to have some fun here, because well, anything besides that, is no fun.. questions, questions, and more questions, and what will the answers be?
you decide.. 1. are you an exjw, but still have remnants (shhh) of former jw thinking?.
-
Prisca
Hey, you're posting Minimus-style questions!!!
....ok, I'll bite:
1. Are you an exJW, but still have remnants (shhh) of former JW thinking?
I don't believe so, although it's hard to know what is JW thinking and what is normal upbringing. I don't regard everything JW-related as bad, eg. it kept me off drugs and sex as a teenager.
2. Are you 'out' there? as in, not afraid to be seen on an apostate site, or known to be a former JW?
Due to still having family who are JWs, I am not as "out there" as I would like to be. Online anyway. Offline I am more open about myself.
3. Are you angry, bitter or sad, as a result of your exposure and participation in JW activities/lifestyle?
No, never felt bitter, just relieved that things what I had suspected about the WTS were true.
4. Do you still have this feeling 'Armageddon' could still come anyday or in the future?
No. In fact, even as a JW I lost belief in Armageddon coming. At least in my lifetime. Now, I don't believe in it at all.
5. What was your biggest epiphany that lead you to leave the JWs, or at least make plans to do so?
Probably the 607BCE lie. Once that was dismantled, everything else fell away too.
6. Do you still read/believe in the bible?
No.
7. Do you still believe in god/higher power?
Yes.
8. Do you accept other exJWs with opposing views than yours: athieism/agnostic vs. belief in god/higher power? (vice-versa)
Yes, why not? I don't believe in anything so passionately that I need to "prove" my opinion is better than anyone else's.
9. Do you grade people on their disfellowshipping offenses? ie: apostacy, fornication, smoking etc.
Not really, although if there were some circumstances in their past that are less than savory, I may be inclined to make some personal judgement ie. Someone who was df'd for child molestation, cheated on their wife and ran off with the secretary, leaving the wife alone to raise a handicapped child.
10. Are you still a JW? (no names required)
Nope.
11. Anything you'd like to add, for what it's worth?
Have a nice day.

I was at a Friday night CO's meeting a year after the original WT was published, when in his last talk for the night he brought up the fact that there had been a change in the wording for that sentence. We were told to bring along our WTs for that night, and we duly changed our WTs to the "correct wording".
Fortunately, I kept that WT so I have the original wording in the original WT, as well as the date when the CO told us to change our WTs.

A letter to the Parents
by SixofNine ina friend gave me permission to post this.
i think it's a good letter, it might help others formulate their thoughts; she understands it may not be read or considered deeply, but things can't get much worse with her family at this point anyway.
no contact is not that much different than contact once per year or less, and sometimes it's just really important to have the people who should know you, at least know you a little.

Prisca
L,
A great letter, I hope that some of what you have written will stick in your parents' minds and maybe help them escape the mind control that's keeping them in the Borg.
