It would probably be more honest to handle out small pamflets and Bible reading plans

Very nice site. As a Modalist Preterist Universalist believer in Christ, I am heretical in all views, but I enjoy especially the timeline as one interested in Watchtower history and errors

Double Standards of the Watchtower
by Vanderhoven7 inare you aware of any double standards promoted by the organization of jehovah's witnesses?
here a a few i am aware of:.
1. the wts equated joining the ymca with apostasy but felt free to join the un for 10 years (1991-2001).

Yes clearly, people fail because they are people. Some people are better than other people, and some people are really bad. They are also good at using religion as excuse.

Rec'd a letter from my Dad - need some advice...
by Fadeaway3pointer infader here - last meeting was in autumn 2005. lurker on this site and others.
not one to get all controversial.. typical situation, pretty much a born in and left the church at age 38 and never looked back.. i'm 53 now, parents getting older - late 70s but very active, dad is still an elder.. parents, in laws, brother and brother-in-law still uber active jws.. my family (wife and 2 adult children) out since 2005.. we have stayed close to our parents - we have treaded religion lightly and have had a pretty good relationship and have kept our personal lives and beliefs/opinions separated from them.
this was intentional - as we love them and do not want anything to cause shunning since they are getting older and want to be there for them and we respect their beliefs.. got this letter today.

If I received such a letter and wanted to give a constructive response, I would write back and ask them to justify their position from a biblical viewpoint. It probably accomplishes nothing but there is a fool's hope.

"except for the JW attorneys and doctors who serve at Bethel." maybe you are supposed to believe they do repent of their evil and try to atone by serving Jehovah

Not everyones JW experience is equally strict. Not every JW family believes and implements everything they get told. But you might say that those that live a more free life shares in a sort of blood guilt. Maybe a bit harsh to say it, but they have a share in keeping the thing together and those that live freer lifes often have more ressources and better education.

Russell's followers in British Columbia?
by dubstepped inso i was interviewing a guy for a podcast episode today and he went and saw his grandmother over christmas to gather some history.
he wasn't raised a jw but it turns out his family was actually opposed to the jws because they went all the way back to russell.
according to him (from her stories), they refused to follow rutherford and that's where the split took place.

I think Laymen are the biggest and also most JW like. Wiki says they have 15,000 members. They have their own Russell in PSL Johnson. They have some of the harsh herd disciplines of the JWs. Free are liberals and the Associated goes on with Russell's old light

Did You Know Any "Genuine"" Old School Anointed?
by Number 6 ingrowing up in scotland in the 1970s in scotland the anointed were few and far between, but we had one old dude in our cong who claimed to be one of the anointed.
in the days when it was taken seriously.. i'd be curious how you viewed them.
thing is, he wasn't an elder, or even a ministerial servant, just a plain old publisher.. but he was revered like he had a hotline to jesus.. the other week i was talking to a friend of similar age to me but who hung around the wt a lot longer than i did, and he just commented "oh him... he was a doddery old fool who used to just sit and piss himself.

I remember ny mother talked of an older woman that "took of the symbols". My mother was not impressed though, believing she was backslidden. There is a really sad story to the garbage teaching of the 144,000. Russell started out with claiming everybody would be raised for a chance in the millenium with the exception of a few real baddies and those that failed the run for "the high calling". Then sometime in the 40s I believe, Rutherford rejected Russell's generous and fanciful understanding of the Matthew 25:31-45 and we got all this' everybody must be saved from the Armageddon slaughter' and the poor average JW is not even a brother of Jesus but is judged according to how he treats the brothers of Jesus, the 144,00 and the org. I remember my poor old father struggled a lot with this diving into forbidden old light, who was right, Russell or Riutherford
