  how ironic, that in hebrew the word for god is actually the name of a canaanite god el.

  ive recently been facinated by the etymology of word, particularly those in the bible.

  anyone can change the meanings or definition of words like we have witnessed with the generation, but the word itself cannot be changed.

  Leolaia: 'Iaon' is the name of a a river in Arcadia (http://books.google.gr/books?id=6BxGAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA215&lpg=PA213&ots=3T40RIYlnc&dq=%CE%99%CE%B1%CF%89%CE%BD+%CF%80%CE%BF%CF%84%CE%B1%CE%BC%CF%8C%CF%82&hl=el). Apart from that google won't help more.

  'Iaon and Zeus' (in Greek) is a study by an (ex)jw researcher and poet a copy of which I do not have available. I hope someone reading this thread might have one and provide us with a pdf.

  Now regarding the rest if you understand Greek avail yourself with this book (from which I have quoted):

  It traces the roots of the Greek language in Proto-Semetic and in extend it is quite enlightening about many subjects like: passover, the ransom!

  Ancient Greeks (Ionians), among other Gods, worshipped Iaon (God of the rain?-compare deluge). Iaon=Ionian. It is clear that Ionians got their name from their God Iaon. Iaon = YHWH.

  Another Greek word that bears the name of YHWH is iahi (=battle cry). So they were shouting/calling the name of Yah, their God, and threw themselves in the battle.

  [BTW: here is the origin of the vowels added to YHWH to form modern day Jehovah and not the b******t story about a Catholic monk...]

  Of course Baal along with human sacrifices to him is not absent from ancient Greece either. Even today the name of a town/suburb near Athens bears his name: Pallini. From ancient Greek texts we find that the name of the suburb was then Ballini which is a clear derivative of the plural of Baal: Baalim. The surrounding hills and mountains provided plenty 'high places' to perform human sacrifices-which were a common practice by ancient Greeks to be substituted later by animal (lamb) sacrifices (compare with the story of Abraham Isaac and the ram).

  Good news, finally regarding my ex-elder-pedophile-father-in-law...

  about two weeks ago he was arested in bc, about 35 years too late thanks to wts cover-up.. he had a baby with my ex-husband's sister - my kids have a cousin who is also their aunt.

  this was all covered up by moving from ontario to bc back in the early 1980s, and it all being hidden by the wts; even allowing this guy to serve as an elder after the fact...when i got married to my ex, his father was an elder, and the baby of the incest was 15. .

  today and from now on, hopefully things will unravell for the wts in canada, as he sits in jail in ontario (where the crimes were committed)charged on 24 counts of sexual abuse.. i hope there is a lot of embarrassment going on in that congregation in ladner, bc when all this originally came to light about 28 years ago, the congregation that let this man become an elder...because, my own parents seem to be in "cover-my-ass" mode when it comes to talking about this matter with me..

  He is up on 24 charges - and these are only the ones they know about. How many other such crimes has he committed?. And more importantly, how many more would he commit if allowed to go free, as you are suggesting?

  ARE you SERIOUS? You want to imprison a person because you think that he may commit a crime?

  Is there evidence that he commited something wrong recently?

So, this perv may have been CAUGHT for a crime he committed 20 years ago, but rest assured, he has probably been molesting children for the ENTIRE 20 years - he just hasn't been caught - or charged - for those molestations, yet...

  You have a point here but still you need proof. As you stated: almost. Almost does not equal to always. So if there is evidence let him rotten in prison.

  Hello... this is me and my story...

  i was raised as a jw, baptized in a 1998 district convention, somewhere in portugal.. studying with jws had some positive things (not many... just a few).

  i learned to read before going to school and developed this excelent skill of reading, interpreting and resuming texts.

  i was an excellent student.. as a teenager my life sucked (and i considered it a "privilege" at that time) because i simply couldn't enjoy these best years of my life, because had to avoid all contact with people of my age (there were no young people in my congregation) so i lived the best years of my life as a "forever alone".

  3.5 years vs. a lifetime of going door to door.

  did it bug you as a witness that jesus only had to go from door to door for 3.5 years, and he was done; while he demanded that you do it for your whole life without preparing for the morrow?

  i just remember a few years back reflecting on the daunting prospect of doing it my whole life if the end didn't come - "sooner rather than later".

  what are your thoughts?.

  he was a bethelite and they found him dead in his room.

  he was the same age as me.
