Child care and abortion - two examples of the complexity of the issue
by fulltimestudent inin a perfect world, one would hope that no woman would need to consider an abortion.
there is unfortunately, no perfect world and there does not seem there will ever be a perfect world.
so consider .... 1. a child rape case in paraguay.. ... but the plot unfolding in paraguay is so dark and twisted that it is currently tearing the south american country apart.it began on april 21 when a mother brought her 10-year-old daughter to a public hospital.

So today I'm watching CBS news coverage of the Popes visit to America. First, let me say I'm not religious at all at this point in my life. Still a few things stood out to me about the news coverage of his visit.
First thing I wondered was if a GB member happened to garnish this much press (unlikely) what would his message be? The Pope's message was pretty much to promote love, peace, healing and forgiveness. The Pope also is speaking about environmental issues, income inequality and immigration. All issues relevant and important to concerned people across religious and demographic strata. A GB member would probably start out with, "You.re all going to be blistered hot dogs at Armageddon."
Next, I thought about the crowds getting in line at one o'clock in the AM to catch a glimpse at the parade route. I think the difference between such passionately believing Catholics and JW Regional Convention attendees was the fact that the Catholics actually WANTED to be there. Sure, JW conventions attract ten of thousands. But if my memory is correct, it was mostly compulsory attendance. Everyone couldn't wait for each day's program to end and were attending mostly because they wanted to look good. Even though many would say it was the "best convention ever" no one really left there feeling the spiritual rapture that the Pope seems to envoke.
In addition, the Pope acknowledges the child sexual abuse scandal and seems genuinely concerned with eradicating such abuses in the future, Whereas JW leadership seems more concerned with damage control and wants to sweep their real problem with child abuse under the rug.
So all things considered, I have to admire the Pope for inspiring a great deal of people across the spectrum of religious belief, (or disbelief) to be better people. It really stands out in contrast with the "you are all gonna die" dogma of the wits.
Who knows? Maybe I'll convert. At least if I ever disagree with the Pope, I won't lose every relationship that I ever had.

What is the most bizarre counsel you received as a JW, from a JW?
by Funchback inthere were many addressed to me.
for example, i once had a sister tell me i was gambling because i liked playing skill crane (the machine where you have to try to pick up prizes like stuffed animals) at the arcade.
i then fired back a her: "you saw the r-rated movie 'backdraft.

A sister once told me that she wanted Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon" played at her wedding reception.
Her husband to be shot it down because of the lyric, "you are all I long for, I WORSHIP and adore." Can't have any of that can we? I think they divorced not long after the marriage.

We are celebrating b-day tonight!
by StarTrekAngel innot that we have not done it before, but the event would come about out a mutual understanding.
never a word or any more than just "we are going out to dinner".
the news this time is that my wife, out of her own initiative, suggested this morning that we should go out and celebrate our daughters b-day.

FMF Rant on Abuse and JW Apologists: The Single Root of the Whole Issue(s)
by freemindfade infor the jw apologists, they debate certain factors to down play all the recent sex abuse information in the jehovah's witness organization.
and there is so much focus on "two witness rule" and "parents can report" the "elders aren't legal authorities" and many other smoke screen issues.
a lot of these issues and discussion are down stream from what i believe to be the root of the issue.

I agree that it (sexual abuse) boils down to a criminal act. So if the elders are made aware that someone has committed murder (another criminal act) and they do not report it to the authorites, aren't they then accessories after the fact?
Aren't they basically promoting this criminality by not reporting it?
