Mesquite Mountain
by peacefulpete inok, the title may make more sense for those who enjoy grilling.
horeb (aka sinai).
most students of the ot are fully aware of the documentary hypothesis in some form, in short it is near universally recognized that the book of exodus, for example, is the composite work of a redactor who has collected the traditions of the judahite and israelite people.

Red Sea Stories Divided.
by peacefulpete inmost of what follows may be new to some but well established by scholarship for well over a hundred years.
anyone reading the genesis stories of creation and the flood are struck by the way two versions of the story have been literally stitched together.
the documentary hypothesis formalized this recognition by assigning names to the sources in genesis and exodus as, j,e,p and a redactor r. while there have been suggested refinements this basic model has stood.

Images
by peacefulpete insimple question.
while the deuteronomists and later writers of the bible condemned the use of images of yahweh, they at the same time imagined him and described him in text as a man in the sky with bow and arrows or riding a chariot drawn by cherubs or sitting on a throne.
if the former is a dishonor, ought not the latter be as well?.

The Lost Qos
by peacefulpete inthe names of the gods of palestine and surrounding regions are known to most of us only through the condemnations of the ot writers.
baal peor, hadad, chemosh, molech/milkom dagon, etc.
it is therefore surprising that the main deity of the sister nation to the south, edom is never mentioned.

Ruining the Earth2.0
by peacefulpete infew years ago i did a thread that i hope has helped some folks.
maybe it is time to 'recycle' it.. did the writer of rev 11:18 (ruin those who ruin the earth) somehow anticipate the modern environmental situation, or did he intend something more in keeping with the bible's general concerns of morality and sin?.
secondly, how does the context help to interpret it?.

Two Powers in Heaven
by peacefulpete inwhile this topic might at first seem to come from left field, it has arisen in my mind when reading a number of recent threads.
this topic in full requires many hours of research to fully assimilate but i'm now only introducing the topic and encouraging further reading.
in short, by the end of the common era judaism included various heavenly figures that took on roles that, for all practical purposes, were those of god.

Nethinim...Con-men or Prostitutes....
by peacefulpete ini thought a short commentary on the "nethinim" (nathinim, nethunim) would be fun.
the word (given (ones) is used in verbal form in reference to the levites until the post exilic stories whereupon it takes on a new usage as a name of a specific non-israelite people serving in the temple.
it is much complicated by the various descriptions from p,d,j but it is clear we have some conflict of opinions about the history and role of this group.. in josh 9 we have an apparent late attempt to identify nethinim with the gibeonites.
