many people here have expressed faith in evolution and in other theories—but in all honesty, do you have any hope whatsoever in your heart or in the back of your mind ?
truthfully..
Sbf... I know it was just an analogy but, a polygon with infinite sides is a circle. IOW..An infinite number of squares form a circle. Intuitive or not.
if you consider that the god they believe in:.
- cannot be seen or heard and is only known in books written by writers we do not know nor do we have the original writings- does not listen to prayers from believers for security, safety, health, survival, protection, rescue, food etc- promises things that have not come true though had plenty of time to act on the promises- does not provide what you need to live- let's you suffer, struggle, work etc equal to non-believers, treated equally.
........ how does a believer look at his/her parents if they hide themselves, do not provide for you (shelter, food etc), make promises but never live up to these, does not provide what you need to live, treats you like anyone else but not as their child?
It's like an insurance policy that you never use.
jws often try to justify their religion as being the only true religion.
questions like.
which other organization is doing this or that?
That defines a cult. The once diverse Christian movements competed for converts. Deep theological disagreements prevented a united political front. An authoritarian hierarchy gradually formed, with Paul apparently instrumental in that development.

It also made 'sense' that the earth was flat and removing bad blood was a cure. I have no fight with believers, if however they ask me to explain why I don't believe, I try to help them understand.
We were discussing improbability and then suddenly it became about feelings, being able to 'sense' a correct conclusion. It's cool, whatever.

I’m not saying that it’s simply statistically improbable for me to exist in particular, or life in general for that matter. I’m saying it’s miraculous that matter, life, and consciousness should have arisen at all.
There is no conceptual difference. If you accept the improbable in the particulars, you have done the same for the whole. The whole is just a bunch of particulars.
cofty could you answer how the single cell came about by chance?.
i know the argument for complexity in nature says natural selection over billions of years but this could not explain the complexity of the single cell the building blocks of life?.
The issue is again with our minds. We are products of a universe constructed and governed, in turn, by products of the universe. Physics only work in this environment. There is no reason to believe physics apply apart from the universe. We therefore may soon reach the point where our models and tools for understanding simply no longer apply. That includes our assumed logic of causation.
Conjuring a deity at this point is just a trick of the mind.
whether you like or loathe the guy, agree or disagree, surely he has a right to express his opinions freely on twitter?.
every bbc employee who appears on tv or speaks on the radio, should now be paranoid about any opinions they've put on their social media accounts, because if the bbc are prepared to censor/silence lineker, they'll go for anyone.. oops: looks like the bbc can dictate what their staff can & can't say in their social media accounts.. https://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidance/individual-use-of-social-media.
pity they weren't as strict with their high profile paedophile, mr. savile..
In the USA similar workplace rules exist for many in public employment. My wife and I signed similar contracts. I was disciplined for a conversation I had with a member of the public (turned out to be related to city council member) wherein I disagreed with the use of funds for a park no one wanted. Private employers can similarly limit personal expression. A local soda bottler has a workplace rule prohibiting the drinking of a competitor's product at work on your lunch break.

SBF...We may not have the full answer to self awareness (consciousness) but whatever it is must be true of 'lower' animals as well.
Invoking statistical possibilities as evidence of providence is a misuse of math. Every single moment in time and space is statistically impossible but the moment it happens is 100% likely. Statical analysis has its place in a localized closed systems (like flipping a coin, heads) but not in predicting every contingency of the universe; (what are the odds the copper formed in a supernova would accrete in the earth's crust, to be mined, to be eventually minted into a coin, to be in your pocket, to be flipped by you and get heads. The odds of predicting that would happen are beyond the scales of mathematic possibility and could mistakenly lead to the conclusion that some supernatural force willed the coin to be heads.
So..., we are left with concluding every single happenstance and contingency is predetermined by supernatural forces, or, that events naturally play out in a sequence beyond our ability to mathematically model. Most folks would not attribute supernatural influence in the countless mundane particulars of every moment but get all philosophical about themselves.
