  Is ignorance a choice for Jehovah's Witnesses in todays information age?

  As mentioned above, fear keeps cult members from looking for information. One could say it is a FOG that prevents them from seeing: FOG = (fear, obligation, guilt). 
  Fear of the apostate boogeyman, fear of Armageddon, fear of Satan, fear of the “World”, fear of losing God’s blessing, fear of being deceived, ect...
  For many of us who have been out for a while, we’ve lost these fears that are drilled into the cult member by constant indoctrination. But for a long time, these fears kept us from seeking an abundance of information that was at our fingertips. 
  I know for me it took 17 years.

  hello all... i currently studying the bible teach book and i'm just curious what information does the study conductor record about the student and is it passed on??

  and they keep on saying "the truth" which is starting to get on my nerves.

  Why are JW talks & publications never uplifting?

  i was sitting at the meeting the other night and for the first time it hit, jw talks or magazines are never uplifting!

  i rarely, if ever hear a talk or read a magazines and have it give nothing but praise to jehovahs servants or just praise jehovah and jesus throughout it.

  they never just a read through the bible or just a bible story explained or told.

  rev 17:9 describes something about the "woman", the harlot, babylon the great:.

  here is where the intelligence that has wisdom comes in: the seven heads mean seven mountains, where the woman sits on top.

  and there are seven kings: five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet arrived, but when he does arrive he must remain a short while.. i was dreaming about this verse last night, so i thought i'd look it up.

  One thing is for sure: No group in the last 2000 years has ever made a successful prediction of the future based on the book of Revelation.
  Now that I'm out of a cult or any form of fundamentalism, I’m much less vested in Revelation. It is more an occasional curiosity to me. The Watchtower’s mistake, inherited from the Adventist, is to based primary beliefs on interpretations of Revelation and Daniel, and then reinterpret the non-symbolic portions of Scripture through that lens. It should always be the other way around.

  I feel this is a problem of reading through a modern lens. We often interpret words based on what it means to us today, versus what they meant to the audience they were intended for. This is case in point with the word that in some translations is translated as ‘earth’.
  When we hear the word ‘earth’, we immediately think of the planet or globe. But the primary meaning of the Greek word is land. This is how Young’s Literal Translation rendered it: “and the woman that thou didst see is the great city that is having reign over the kings of the land.'”
  At the very least, when reading the Old Testament or the New, when the word earth appears in our modern translations, we need to question how the ancient audience would have understood the word and in what context.

  Not a theory that I came up with, but a possibility that I became convinced of a number of years ago. It is called Preterism. 

  In regard when the point above, either of these possiblities seem likely:
  

  (1) Revelation was written before 70. 

  (2) Revelation was written as apocalyptic style literature as commentary on events that had already transpired. The inclusion of this book in the canon was much disputed.

  i was contacted by the witnesses in1965, baptized in that same year at age 15. i was appointed an elder in 1975 and served as an elder for 20 years..

  it hasnt been long since i learn ttatt and when i totally woke up.

  Five have fallen:
  

  (1) Julius Caesar

  (2) Caesar Augustus

  (3) Caesar Tiberius

  (4) Caesar Caligula

  (5) Caesar Claudia

   

  One is:

  (6) Caesar Nero = 666

   

  One is yet to arrive, but remains only a short while: 

  (7) Caesar Galba

  Babylon the Great = ancient Jerusalem. The key to understanding Revelation!
