Too cool, Sandra! Got room for any passengers?
i would suspect there are very few posters on this forum who would not agree the wbts has been less than honest about numerous issues and have used manipulation and distortion of facts for it's own aggrandizement.
but do you ever think some of the posters on this board employ the some of the same tactics to characterize the 'borg' in a less than completely honest light?
what do you think?

having grown up a loyal little dub, i vaguely remember the time growing up (maybe 60's or 70's) that the catholics changed the rules that allowed them to eat meat on friday (i take this issue personally because in my school they always fed us the most horrible tasting tuna every friday).
i remember how my parents laughed at them and said "how are all those people that they believe are in hell going to feel now?".
my question is, for those who were catholics at that time, how was that handled for public relations purposes?
Bowels:
Don't really know anything about this 'meat on Friday' thing. I just wanted to say WELCOME! and comment on what a beautiful nickname you have. It doesn't presage anything about what you're going to bring to the board here, does it?

Abaddon:
Well, for example, one of the posts today is from someone who's asking for help to get back to "the truth". He stated he had a bad drug and alcohol problem and thought getting Jehovah back in his life was what he needed. I posted a reply saying, in essence, that would simply be replacing drugs and alcohol with something else which would control his life. Now while that may not be untrue, it didn't really address the issue in a very helpful way. So, was I really trying to help or just take a poke at the WBTS? (Just a rhetorical question?)
For the record, I'm not trying to suggest anything about anyone's posts in particular. It's just a question!

Rich, assuming your serious and not a jokester, you really need to think this out and decide exactly where it is you're trying to get to. If you're tired of drugs and alcohol controling your life and you're just looking for some alternative to control your life, you're on the right track. Just walk into any Kingdom Hall and ask for a Bible study. You'll be well taken. (Care of, that is.) However, if you're really wanting to get your mind clear and get control of your life, there's other sources you will likely find more practical. You might want to start with http://www.nida.nih.gov. or contact a local counseling agency. Once you've got a little better grip on things, do some serious and objective research on exactly what "the truth" has to offer. If that's still what you think you want to be, by all means, carry on!
as witnesses, we were admonished to never look at horoscopes because they are demonic.
many jw's that i knew of would not even look at a fortune cookie because they could be "demonized".
i read my gemini everyday.
I'm a Pogo myself. (The sign of the 'possum.) I'm having a hell of a time finding anything about it on any horroscope, though!
troubled by reports of the very problems that were supposed to be only the mark of false religions peadophilia (and hiding it) and hypocrisy (supporting the un) many honest hearted jws, it seems, have slowed down their meeting attendance and field ministry.
what has the society done to calm these very real worries concerning actual, not imagined, problems.. .
simple.
'anyone inexperienced puts faith in every word'
Doesn't the 'Society' pretty much count on that mind-set from it's readers?!
.
how many of you out there joined another religion, since leaving the watchtower?edited by - jh on 11 january 2003 20:38:28.
No more for me, thanks! A "relgion" is just an opinion, with a lot of formality and ritual attached. And you know what they say opinions are like! Everybody's got one and one's enough for me!
i've been back in town now for about six months, finally the elders want to visit me.
what a bunch of bull but they have my wife convinced they just want to come and encourage me.
she has told them all the things i no longer believe in and that i ain't interested in being stupid anymore, but they still blow the bull by her.
"You could say "I'm not interested"!!"
Wow! How original, Ozzie!
howdy all,.
has anyone noticed that some jws (prematurely) will run to debate the "trinity", "hell", "immortality of the soul", but they head for the hills when someone brings up the watchtower's present claims which are supposed to show why god approved and appointed them over all his belongings?
i find that when jws do become unwittingly involved with such a discussion, they practice a method of bait and switch.
First of all David, let me say I really appreciate your posts, above. I never realized Russell, or the WTS had made such comments on the subject of evolution. Very enlightening to me.
In my opinion, the reluctance of the rank and file JW to be drawn into certain discussions betrays something very fundemental about their acedemic agenda. JWs are coached to a far greater extent than they are taught, anything. Not unlike a football team, they will design certain offenses to attack what they consider to be certain doctrinal weakness in their opponent's defenses and vice versa with defenses to the opponent's offenses. They draw up and practice hypothetical allignments and positions and are coached in the use of selected scriptural texts and arguments until they are confident to venture onto the playing field, assuming most of those they encounter will be inferior and defenseless. But when, rarely, they happen to encounter a truly worthy opponent who presents an offense for which they have no designed and practiced defense, their scholastic prowess is quickly shown to be quite superficial. And, to me, it's really sad. All those hours of meetings and preparation for meetings, week after week, year after year, and all the vast majority of them have to show for it is just a facade of spirituality and scriptural understanding.
