Churches Liable For Residential School Abuse, Court Rules
Oct, 22 2005 - 10:40 AM
VANCOUVER(CKNWAM980) - Churches which ran native residential schools in the last century may not hide behind "charitable immunity" for abuses suffered by the children.
That's one of the key points of a ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada on the notorious Alberni Residential School on Vancouver Island.
The highest court split the liability 25% to the Church and 75% to the Federal Government, overturning a lower court ruling which had let the Church off the hook.
Peter Grant, lawyer for plaintiff Leroy Barney, says this will have implications for other suits in the works. "Churches or charitable organizations must take care to protect the children that are in their care," he says. "I hope the Court's decision will persuade the Catholic church, because these issues right now are alive with respect to the Catholic church denying its shares in liability, that it will take responsibility for its operations in the schools as well."
The Court says the Government has to wear the blame for its policies of putting native kids in the schools in the first place, and the Church for hiring the people who abused them.
But the Court reduced the damages to Barney for the sexual abuse. He had also suffered mental and physical abuse, which are time-limited criminal offences, and the Court found that much of the harm he suffered would be due to that abuse, not solely the sexual abuse.

Do you think that Armaggeddon is "near" or many, many years away?
by booker-t ini am 40 years old and i have been hearing the same old song by jw's "armaggeddon is around the corner" since i was a toddler.
it has to come to their minds that how long are they going to keep saying that armaggeddon is "near" or "around the corner"?
or they eventually going to quit believing in this fantasy and look at reality?

Mmmmmm bread machines
by Lady Lee ini have a bread machine and have been experimenting with it this week.
my first breads were really dense and heavy.
they were ok but definitely not great.. so i went to the books and they said the liquids need to be lukewarm not cold from the fridge.. so after yet another white bread heavy i just tried a raisin bread recipe.. ok i'm addicted.

Does an "Eldership" depend on their family's sprituality?
by damselfly indo elders have to step down when their kids or wives leave the "truth" ?
they always did in my area as it was said if they couldn't shepard their own families then how could they manage the "flock"?.
are men with unbeliving mates typically elected as elders?

we had an elder in our hall, our PO for quite a while,,,,,his daughter was good friends with mine...well she left with a bang, but was still living at home,,,she got involved with kids in a gang and her boyfriend was in jail for murder or something just as bad
he was not removed of any position, and he should have been just for his blatant homosexual ways.....

Where we got the term 'honeymoon', another not do for jw??
by orbison11 init was the accepted practice in babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink.
mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month .
which we know today as the honeymoom.
