I'm not sure why religions insist upon living and teaching from thousands of years ago. A time when people lived in fear of things they didn't understand and didn't have the knowledge or words to describe things and events in terms that are relevant to us in 2015. Why are we taught to live, and believe, in the middle-east over 2000 years ago? When is there going to be some new material? I don't think I've every really read about religion that hasn't been hashed and rehashed 1000 times. And tomorrow we'll go over the same stories again.

by crolson inhi, i am not a jw, but i am a student studying the jehovah's witnesses.
i was wondering if a jw could answer a few questions for me about your doctrine?.
where does your teaching come from (which writings)?.

I realize this may sound obtuse, but for those that know can you explain how the WT/JW are the 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel? -

It all really confuses me.
You would have to go back and start with Arius about 300 AD. Arius was a Catholic Bishop that decided that Jesus was not divine - not part of God - he preached no Trinity. Many versions of Christianity existed and a lot of arguments. The emperor Constantine (pagan) was sick of the political problems and called for a council to hash out their problems (Council of Nicaea). Arius was kicked out, banished to the north, and ALL of his works were ordered to be burned. He hated Catholics and proclaimed the orthodox Catholic church heretics and apostates - which is really contradictory. The WT/JW carry that grudge/hate of Catholics to this day. The Council assembled the New Testament. Charles Russell, who never passed the 7th grade at the time for whatever that's worth, had been a member of a number of failed churches that claimed many false prophesies - everyone quit. In his reading he stumbled upon Arius from the 3rd century - and for lack of a better term, thought he was "cool".
I don't understand why the WT/JW worship Arius, but use a Catholic Bible that was very intentionally assembled all around the Trinity. There is no scripture that proves that Jesus was Micheal. I think there is one verse that the NWT changes that is very misinterpreted - in a desperate grasp to justify Arius in a Catholic Bible assembled entirely around the Trinity. The entire New Testament is about the Trinity - by design.
I truly don't understand the whole 144,000 thing at all. In Revelations, and I think Daniel, the 144,000 are VERY SPECIFICALLY 12,000 of each of the 12 tribes of Israel. I don't know where and when Russell came up with the idea that it meant some random group of people in Pennsylvania or Brooklyn NY. Again - the Bible says 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. Yet Rutherford sent letters to Hitler (published online) how he agrees with hating Jews. Huh?
Russell claimed that public was too stupid to read the Bible on there own - he went on to create an encyclopedia set of volumes of how people should understand the Bible. I don't understand that. But yet is known for disapproving of education to be able to think for themselves. He tried desperately to Arius-ize the Christian Trinity Bible. I'm the public, I read the Bible. I don't need a dozen other books to explain it to me - and in very distorted terms. The WT/JW should have never tried to highjack a Christian Bible - they should just read rantings of Russell.

Hey Simon
by ShirleyW ini'm noticing that when i open quite a few of the posts here i notice that the end of the sentences on some lines are breaking improperly.
like for the word paragraph, it's broken up with the "aph" on the next line for an example.
it's happening a lot i'm seeing it just about in every post i open, is it just my view and my computer?.

I see the word wrap in Firefox. It's doesn't bother me. What is really odd is that the summaries of the topics in the main topics list truly seem to have a mind of their own. Sentences from one paragraph are moved to the beginning of the next paragraph. There is a clear break between paragraphs, but it seems to reformat the original content. My last post didn't make a lot of sense with sentences shifted to other paragraphs.

An apple doesn't fall far from the tree
by WireRider inhttp://jwdivorces.bravehost.com/decisions/ctrdivorce.html - the founder of the wt/jw and a reflection about his views of himself and life and the religion he built.
his legacy is alive and well, even today.. "while professing at all times to be guided by the word of god the undisputed evidence is that he would sulk for weeks at a time and not speak to his wife, and would resort to the pen to have any communications with her; instead of approaching her personally to try to secure reconciliation of their differences and praying with her as a godly man would have done, he went about among her associates and told them she was under the hypnotic influence of satan in the form of her sister, who was his father's second wife.
" a little bent.. i remember reading an article that had photo copies of a local area news paper that included the facts, from court, that she filed for divorce due to cruelty, an in part because russell would lock himself self in a bedroom with the 14 year old "house girl" that cleaned.

I remember reading an article that had photo copies of a local area news paper that included the facts, from court, that she filed for divorce due to cruelty, an in part because Russell would lock himself self in a bedroom with the 14 year old "house girl" that cleaned. When she was called to testify, the court was told she was traveling - Russell had given her some cash and put her on a sloooow boat to Australia.
For those that know my story - the divorced woman I was engaged to lived her entire marriage under the training of Russell's legacy. Beat her and treated her like a servant.
I don't see much difference in the JW thinking today. Russell was the original child sexual abuse scandal. Is it any wonder that it still exists, and covered up, by the WT/JW.

Does Anyone Still Believe in God?
by LaurenM indo any of you ex-jw's still believe in god?
even with the new rebranding/softening of this religion, i still don't see how people can believe in him.
the god of the old testimate is an angry murderer who approved rapes and slavery and killed thousands of men, women and children.

Brief scan of the long videos. I can agree will instinctual concepts of things like fight or flight concepts. But what is it that compels people from ever continent to independently develop a compulsion for religion in such a uniform way? Perhaps it is a mental predisposition for a higher authority or want to be relieved of complex decisions - but what caused human evolution to suddenly fast forward to that level? It is entirely possible that that worship, servitude, and religion were instilled to humans by design.

Granted - but a common theme in a matter of only a few thousand years in the midst of a million years of evolution. Humans really seem to have exploded on to the scene.

I would like an answer. But in the mean time I am open to your theory. I'm not sure if anyone has proof from why every continent independently had a sudden compulsion to develop a religion around the same time as Christ. -

Why did hundreds of independent cultures point up and say "God"? And have an overwhelming compulsion to pay homage and pray and believe is a being greater than us? How did that happen?

Throw the Bible away. It is an ancient antique, full of distorted hand-me-down stories from many generations from isolated areas of the middle east. It was written and assemble by humans that wanted to scare the crap out of people, beat their wives, and keep political/emotional control of herds of humans.
The fact is that for a relatively brief period of human existence, about 10,000 years, virtually every culture on the planet, completely independently, developed a sense of religion of a God - or being - from "up there" - or whatever. That is greater than us. Not from here. Instrumental in the creation/development of humans. How can you explain that? A giant evolution of humans - several hundreds of thousands of years of human development happened almost overnight - and then the whole world of humans is looking to the skies and uniformly develops religion - from beings "up there". For each in their own paradigm and cultural bias and filters. How did that happen?
Science or not. How did that happen?
