probably everyone else thought of this long ago, but i, being an "independent thunker" thunk of it just a coupla weeks ago.. we all know that since the year zero (on the fredfranzian calendar) the wtb&ts has defied archaeology and insisted that jerusalem was destroyed in 607 bce, even though the physical evidence shows that 587 bce is a more likely date.
in fact, the book "the gentile times reconsidered: have jehovah's witnesses been wrong all along about 607 bce?
" by carl olof jonsson and rud persson made this conversation public.. it is a difference of 20 years.
Jeffro: Where do people get this incorrect notion that it’s not taught anymore??
I don't think anyone is denying that it is taught (like a hoop to jump through or a box to tick) but I think the consensus is that no-one cares about it.

Scholar JW: The fact is that despite the numerous charts, books on chronology, and academic journal articles no scholar today knows the precise date for the fall except Jehovah's Witnesses by means of those 'celebrated' WT scholars.
Total bellend. Deserves to be ignored.

Serious consideration was presented to the Jehovah's Witnesses in the form of C.O.J's well researched book. It's been discussed here ad-nauseum. The KISS method by Alleymom (use the search function) absolutely killed 607.
There's no excuse for indulging your wilful ignorance 'Scholar'.

Scholar JW: all that you have done is pushed your agenda on 587 without giving any serious consideration to the alternative - 586 BCE.
So should we give serious consideration to homeopathy as an alternative to real medicine? Should creationists be invited into biology classes to present the alternative to established evolutionary principles?
You're an idiot.

scholar JW: it is far better to rely on the ancient inspired historical record of the Holy Bible
And there we have it folks. If anyone was wondering if our resident 'scholar' might actually be onto something you can be assured that his ramblings are based on nothing but faith. Rational enquiry has nothing to do with it.

Witness 007: This would be a massive blow worse then 1975 where a milliion left the org
With respect, no. Difference being that dates and chronology mattered to the bulk of JW's in the 70s. Not anymore. As Gorb said it's just a lifestyle movement now.
during lett’s announcement that beards are now allowed he elaborated at some length how brothers ought to feel and react to the change in policy.
he warned brothers not to resent not being able to grow beards earlier if they had wished to do so.
he also warned brothers who supported the old policy not to allow themselves to wonder what the point of doing so was now that it has changed.
Despite the seismic changes to their expectations for the future , re the resurrection and survival - the things that have really got them talking are the changes in dress and grooming. The other stuff goes by with hardly a word .
What does that show about them?
That they aren't in it for anything other than the social club. I was going to say that it might show how shallow JW's are but perhaps that's a bit unkind.
Perhaps.
i'm still digesting these changes and i think i'll reserve judgement for some months until we see how it all plays out in reality.. however, if the disfellowshipping process really has been de-fanged and shunning is beginning it's retreat into the society's past then what excuses will there be in the years to come for anyone who wants to leave?.
i can almost understand why they've done this.
more carrot, less stick.
I hear what you're saying Slim' I just wonder about the difference between the new rules and the actual behaviour that these changes will trigger.
The signal has been sent and generations of young JW's who were never on-board with this abusive behaviour anyway now know that the Org is losing the stomach for it.
There comes a point when the kids just aren't scared of the cranky, stick waving, old men anymore.

I can almost understand why they've done this. More carrot, less stick. Anything to keep the young ones from leaving. Relaxed grooming and dress codes, gentler disciplinary rules, no mandatory reporting or even in-person meeting attendance. I mean, how easy can they make it?!
Doctrine is next I'll bet.
Could this be a watershed to match 1995? I think so but only time will tell. Hardly seems worth fighting this self neutered opponent anymore.
