I'm a little curious why they would even publish the names like this. Presidents and other officers of the legal corporations have to be publicly stated, but not the others. In the old days the GB tried to keep a low profile, and I kind of admired that. Nowadays they seem eager to take the spotlight and the JWs treat them like rock stars or something. -

Divination in a congregation in the early 80's?
by purrpurr ini was recently told by a jw relative about a congregation in the 80's i think in the uk but i'm not sure.
this cong got involved with divination big time, like the whole cong pretty much.
oujia boards the works and the branch had to go in there to clean up the cong, about half the cong were df'd and the whole elder body was taken down and replaced.. this is news to me, can anyone shed some light on this?.

I met a Jw from Nigeria and he talked a lot about demonism. I could see that the different culture and background made the jw experience different. I could see a congregation of immigrants getting involved with something like that -

Bible Reading Assignment This Week is About THE LEVIATHAN
by xjwsrock ina brother went on stage and read .
job 41:1-26. jehovah is straight up talking to job about a fire-breathing dragon in this passage.
it was surreal to hear this read without as much as a raised eyebrow in the audience.. here it is: (mind you this is almighty god talking one-on-one with job).

Woodworth and Fisher wrote the Finished Mystery, rather than Russell. Their interpretation of the Leviathan was one of the most bizarre the WT has ever come up with.
I have read somewhere that the Leviathan passage was a reference to a previously existing myth about a Chaos monster conquered by God in the creation.

124 faces the water. All the rooms on that side have a full view of Manhattan -

The 124 building I always thought had the better views of Manhattan and the river than 107. Maybe 107 is in better shape or is more valuable for some reason. But the 124, to me, was the 'centerpiece' of their presence there. Maybe that's just my perception. -

What was your first public bible reading? And when?
by Mandrake ini perfectly remember that, rehearsing with mom, trying to read with enough emphasis and in a proper tone.
i was 5 years old, back then in 1996 i think, and the portion was james 5:1-13.... i found today that i still know the first verses by heart!!!
it's actually a cherished memory for me, i came to memorize those because mom had me starting the reading all over again until i got to read it properly... and in time!!!

When I started, about '67 or '68, the 'beginner's talk', I think it was #2 then, was a regular talk, not a reading. My first one was about the 'Grapes of Wrath' in Revelation. Hilarious now, when you think of it, that a first grade kid would have to speak on such a subject for six minutes. -

How might the life expectancy in a country play into the WT growth and retention? For instance, Malawi shows a life expectancy of 60. All the adult age JWs who lived through the Malawi persecution in '72-'74 are over 60, so the majority are dead. The current JWs there don't remember it.
Many of the countries with higher growth rates are those with low life expectancies, particularly in Africa. This means that any growth there is short-lived.
I do know that looking around the assemblies (in the US) it is shocking to me how old the JWs are. They can't make the 'elderly and infirm' section large enough anymore.

No historical evidence for bronze age men living to 500yrs old?
by purrpurr inthe bible tells us that noah etc lived to 500yrs old as did many other characters who lived apparently to incredible years.. yet archaeological research tells us from looking at skeletons that have been dug up that the average lifespan was very short.
if a man got to the age of 50 they would have considered that quite an achievement.
when i was in i always wondered about this?

There are some countries now where the expected lifespan is only 49-50 years old. I expect in Bronze age or before it wouldn't have been much different than that, maybe less.
