This has probably been mentioned before, but the FIRST place in Watchtower literature to use the name 'Jehovah's Witness' with capital J and W was a reference to the Great Pyramid in the Studies in the Scriptures. As was (and is still common), the Society thinks it has to have an application to every scripture, and when the Great Pyramid doctrine was dumped, the question was, 'then what does the 'stone witness' prophecy refer to? Bingo, Rutherford came up with the name Jehovah's Witnesses

I just finished The Silmarillion. Any suggestions on next Tolkien to read?
by sd-7 ini've read 'the hobbit', 'the lord of the rings' (including the appendices, well, except the shire calendar and elvish language), and 'the silmarillion'.
i was really impressed with 'silmarillion'.
almost seems like it could be a movie in itself.

I remember rushing to the bookstore to buy The Silmarillion first edition in hardback... still have it. I was greatly disappointed, as it is not nearly as readable as either The Hobbit or The Lord Of the Rings. The background is interesting to the diehard fans, but really it is a bear to read

Are the Witnesses Really Losing Their Young People?
by What Now? inthat article about jehovah's witnesses having the lowest retention rate for born ins keeps popping up every now again ... i'm just curious if any of you have noticed that this is actually the case.
in the congregation that i grew up in, i'm going to say that 95% of the young people in their teens to mid twenties are either regular pioneering, regular auxiliary pioneering, serving in foreign language congregations or where the need is greater.
both of my younger sisters are regular pioneers - and the young people in their hall even organize 8 pm to midnight service on friday nights of their own accord.

At a recent Circuit assembly in the US Midwest, in the Sunday talk by the C.O. 'Needs of the Circuit', he made some interesting comments. He said that of the 146 pioneers in the circuit, only 3 were under age 20, and only 25 or so were under age 30. He said very few young brothers are reaching out, and that the average age of ministerial servant in the circuit was 49. I was surprised by the figures, and also that he would admit to it in a public talk.

I am continually shocked at how baptisms have dropped off, yet the typical witnesses don't seem to realize it. A circuit assembly this weekend in London Ohio had 2 baptized out of 900 in attendance. 2/900 = .0022

I could see the large reference bible being made available only in electronic media. Simply because of the cost, and reasoning that they don't generally use it from the platform or in field service.
If the religion were really interested in the spiritual well being of their people (they are not and that is the problem) they do need to have a major revision of the NWT. Large parts of it, especially the OT, is worded in such an awkward manner as to be unreadable. Given that the 'translation' work was done between 1945 or so and 1961, it is remarkable that they are still using it.
I really doubt that the cash-strapped organization can pull it together to do anything other than band-aid tweaks to the NWT. Another complication is that whatever is done in English then has to be done in umpteen other languages. The cost would start to mushroom

WT Society, Travel agency? Latest money making scheme?
by dropoffyourkeylee inrecently there was quite a buzz at the local hall of people applying to be a specially approved candidate to attend an international convention overseas.
one person i knew applied to go to the assembly next year in south africa.
she was elated to find she and her daughter-in-law were accepted for the south africa site.

One person I knew applied to go to the assembly next year in South Africa. She was elated to find she and her daughter-in-law were accepted for the South Africa site. Now she finds out that the WT society's arranged tour will cost $8000 per person (US). She will probably back out as it is beyond her ability to pay. The advance letter and application did not give the cost. So my question is this, does the WT society get any portion of this? Is this simply another moneymaking scheme of the Society. It really sounds fishy to me.

For a 2013 comparison, I located this website:
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2012/states/NY.html
which shows the top 50 companies in order of annual revenue in the state of New York, 42 of which are in NYC. To make this list the company needs 4.8 billion in annual revenue. Things have changed a lot in 12 years since 2001, I doubt the WT society would make any top 40 list now.

Thanks gopher,
The 951M in 2001 equates to roughly 1.23 billion in today's dollars, due to inflation. I still would not have believed that would put it in the top 40 of a major financial center like New York. wow

I have not read the links provided, but I find it hard to believe that 951M per year would put the WT organization in the top 40... nowhere near it
