I haven't seen the pictures although I've heard about them. I also heard one TV news show say the pictures are not real. I'm don't know who is right, but I do know that in general well established newspapers still have a lot more credibility than Internet sites. I still trust a newspaper with a good reputation for confirming facts over a fast Internet site. Even with the recent New York Times scandle, I'd be more inclined to trust it or the Washington Post than some Internet site that prides itself on being the first to bring out the story. So I think the regular news organizations should continue doing what they are doing for now.

Did God Create Dinosaurs Or UFOs?
by Latin assassin from Manhattan ini remember at a district convention in yankee stadium back in the 80's where the district overseer mentioned the possibility of one day being able to share the universe "with other creations of jehovah" as he put it.
it definitely got everyone's attention because he even went so far as to say that perhaps ufos are a creation of jehovah, but we haven't been told of their purpose.
when i heard that i nearly choked on my jw-hoagie.

I am also surprised someone said that from the stage. There was an Awake that came out in the 90's on the subject. I remember part of the rhetoric in that magazine was quoting the scripture where it says that Christ died once for all time. They continued to reason that if there was intelligent life somewhere else in the Universe, then we couldn't say that Christ died once for all time. I think I'm remembering that right. [ Edited to add this: No I didn't remember that exactly right. Noumenon's post below is a more accurate explanation of the JW reasoning.] Of course, at this point we have no evidence that there are UFO's. But if there is other life out there, who's to say at what level their intelligence operates. It could be something on the level of an amoeba or it could be something so much more intelligent than us that they would view us like we view cows. In one of my philosphy classes, we had a mock debate. One side was the humans and the other side was a super intelligent aliens that wanted to use humans for research and eat them. So basically the humans were pretending to be cows pleading for their lives. Back on point, I think that Awake's argument was flawed if you consider Christ had to be an exact equal of Adam. If there is other life out there, there's nothing to say that it would be similar to humans or anything we have ever imagined.

Gunfire in New York City Hall
by Brummie in2 policemen shot, it looks like an attempt to assasinate the new york mayor.
apparently he is safe.. i would have loved to live in new york a few years ago.
it looks like its the most dangerous place to live right now, not because of the current attempt to shoot the mayor but because it is the centre of worl attention and any nut case wanting world attention simply has to do some act of terrrorism there.. would you live there?.

I live in Washington, DC now. Yes I would live there. I like big cities. There are dangers anywhere one goes even in the rural areas. Personally, I prefer the set of pros and cons a big city gives me over the set of pros and cons a rural area gives me. I have lived in both settings.

Special K,
No I was raised a JW, baptized at 12 years of age. I was lucky to come along just as there a little bit of softening on the no college position. I was also lucky to have parents that were willing to support me in whatever decision I made along those lines. The Awake with the change in position came along in the spring of 1995 which happens to be the year I graduated from High School. That particular Awake was certainly not pro college but it wasn't totally against college as the WTS had been in the past. But I know that in some areas elders and others in authority continued to discourage college aggressively.
Those jobs you mention are not always so crappy. I know one brother who had a window-washing business. Along with his wife's parttime work, I got the impression that they were doing better than I was doing. They drove a better car and had a nicer apartment in a nicer area. They were also both pioneers.

Class Distinction Within The JW Community?
by Latin assassin from Manhattan inhas anyone noticed that jws who appear to be higher up on the 'socio-economic' ladder get special treatment at the kh?
no matter how many khs i've visited, i've noticed that jws who are not well off socially/financially/physically are treated with less respect/dignity than those with a business of their own, or just a higher quality of life.
i've been to many 'gatherings' where jws filter themselves out according to race or socio-economic standing.

Yes I noticed. I was thinking of this when I read the thread about racism in the JW a few days ago. Class distinction along socio-economic lines seems to be much more common than racism today in the general population and among JW. I am probably guilty of it myself. I couldn't help but feel as if I had taken a step down in the congregation when my father stepped down from being an elder, despite the fact that it was my father who had lost his position.

Pulled out of Sex Ed classes
by Nosferatu infor those of you who had a jw childhood, were you pulled out of sex education classes?
did it bother your conscience if school surprised you with one?
after being deprived from sex knowledge and since the society doesn't make diagrams, how did you learn about it?
-

I was not pulled out of the sex-ed class. I don't remember exactly how they told parents about the class, but they told them and my parents didn't object. My father had already explained the male end of things fairly well although he wasn't very explicit on the female side of things. Yeah I know, that's the part I'd need to know the most about anyway. But I don't think my parents were particularly concerned about the class since my father had already had his talk with me. Anyway, I was in a rural Bible belt area. They split the boys and girls for the classes. I was in 7th or 8th grade. We went to one class and they had some slides talking about the male organ with diagragms showing it in the flaccid and erect state. I don't remember much about the female side. Maybe that was supposed to come in the next installment of the class, but there was never another class, because after some of the hick parents heard about exactly what was in the first class, there was a fuss and they canceled it.

I like my job. I can't say I love it. I have an electrical engineering degree and my job with the federal government requires my degree, but is not electrical engineering. But its still interesting at times. It also pays my bills and has decent benefits. I got the job when I was a JW. When I was looking for a job, I was still a JW and I had to pass up many opportunities because many companies who hire entry-level engineers are hiring for jobs that service contracts for the department of defense. I'm not sure if I would want to be in that type of work even now. I'm just not sure I'd want to be involved in developing things to help kill better even though a lot of the technology ends up having non-killing applications as well.
I had a lot of jobs before this job while in high school and college. None paid very much and some were physically demanding, but I don't think I'd call any of them crappy. I learned something at every job I worked, even at the grocery store stocking and fast food job I worked and I wouldn't be above going back to work at any of those jobs if I had to do that. But hopefully I will never have to do that.

WT Books Going Missing
by ignored_one ini recently visited my local library looking for books on jws.
checking the computer system i found that pretty much all the 'anti' books had been marked as 'lost'.
lost?

Apparently CofC is missing from the main library here. The database listed one copy that was supposedly available at the main library when I checked several months ago. I went to the shelf and it wasn't there. I thought perhaps it had maybe been picked so I asked a librarian and checked back a few days later and did this a few more times. I never found the book. The library isn't in the best shape, but it is suspicious that this book is missing. On the other hand I did find James Penton's book there.

Different Languages
by Ariell inwhy do we speak different languages if not for the reason given in the bible?
-
maxwell
I agree. I'd add the observation, that if you go back 500 years and try to understand the English spoken and written then you'd have a very hard time. go back a few hundred more and you would only understand it if you were an expert. I'm sure the same evolution is going on in other languages as well. Really, language has evolved in my short lifetime. Go back 20 years and use the word email or webpage. Anyone read any of those OLD (don't hold me to that as a technical term) English poems like Beowulf in the original text in high school?

Do the Elders know about this?
by meadow77 in.
what kind of an example are we setting for young witness girls regarding modesty?
i personally think she looks nice, although maybe she should try for some darker colors; but because of her jw affiliation, it justs makes one stagger at the double standards.

I find her very attractive, but I have to agree, she's one of those women who could probably whip my butt if she wanted to. As for style of dress, nothing I can say about that. I have always been the nerd/geek in clothing style before and after being a witness. Both the Williams sisters would look good to me in almost anything or nothing.
