Tell Us About Your JW Father If You Had One.
by new boy inwe are great friends now....but he wasn't much of a father growing up.. worked all the time...we went on few vacations....pretty much pussy whipped my my nazis jw mother.. he never did believe in the whole jw thing.
he just when along with it, for my mothers sake.. she never did respect him for not being a "spiritual head" and pretty much let us kids know about it.. i, like my mother became very self rightious and judgmental.. i wished now he had just came to me just once and said "keith maybe the jws are not the people you think they are.
" but he was to afraid of my mother to say that...even though he knew it to be true.i would have never believed him....back then....but it would have planted a seed.... .

How do we encourage the science of homosexuality?
by sabastious inat one point in my life i chose to stop listening to my religion's advice to not research outside of their framework.
about the time i made that decision was when the gay marriage debate was going very strong; and still is to this day.
back then i felt like my state of california was leading the front on it to stop the bigotry and oppression once and for all.. it was a hot topic for me because i was questioning the bible and my faith so i started researching the science of homosexulality.

This was one of my #1 reasons for questioning the WT and the Bible in general. Without giving too much info, I can say this point really hits home...

LETS TALK SATAN....WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?
by Quentin ini for my part do not believe there is a satan the devil.
he does not exist.
there is a creator, but no oposite number, no satan.

Satan has always been a convenient scapegoat for humanity to blame their atrocities on.
Precisely how I feel, Keyser Soze. If all the evil in the world comes from the devil, where does that leave room for human responsibility?

At this point how does the science of homosexuality move on objectively? As long as Christianity, with it's full spectrum, exists then the Christian Right will always say that homosexuality is a mental disorder and they will assemble psuedo-scientists to add credibility to their agument. They will not be defeated because they cannot allow their sacred text to go down. They will go down first.
Exactly. As with ANY area where science and the Bible conflict, science is always questioned. The Christian Right will attack gay marrriage just like they'll continue to attack the theory of evolution, and similar scientific priniciples. Science is Religion's worse nightmare. Nobody questions gravity. Of course not, it has nothing to do with God. The questioning of science is really only motivated by religion. If it's motivated by genuine skepticism, then it just amounts to peer review and a true quest for knowledge. If not, it's because it hurt someone's feelings and they start with a number of conclusions/assumptions (the Bible is infallible, it is God's word, and by that, they mean the ONLY true God, the Bible must be taken literally, etc.), and gather "evidence" in an attempt to prove these unfounded claims. Science is a practice in rationality and works the opposite way.

The Watchtower, a cult that worships the FDS and GB!
by VM44 inwith the continual emphasis that the watchtower places on following and trusting the fds and the gb in particular, one can only come to the following conclusion:.
the watchtower (and the jehovah's witnesses) are followers of a cult that worships the fds and the gb!.
essentially everything in the bible refers to the fds/gb.. everyone must listen to and follow what the gb says.. everyone must consume the "rich spiritual food" provided by the fds and the gb!.

i dont see anyone else doing world wide organized preaching work preaching about Gen 3:15 and paradise on earth.
And this, my dear blueweed, is likely due to the fact that different denominations have different interpretations of Genesis 3:15. Also, I think you fail to realize that there ARE, in fact, other religions that preach. Being a global organization is'nt really a requirement. Yes, I know the Bible says that the message will be preached in all the inhabited Earth, but can you be certain that the "message" JWs preach is this same message? Are you careful to examine the context of that scripture? More importantly, is the Watchtower Society known by its good fruits? Is the message being spread effectively? How can it be that the world is so ignorant of the "Truth," yet it's being preached loudly and far and wide? If this message is so effective and jws have Holy Spirit, then why does it take so many service hours to produce one new baptized member?

Why This Atheist Respects the Jehovah's Witnesses-And why other Atheists should too!
by RaustBD ini'm an atheist, and i'd like to take some time to talk about why i hold a great deal of respect for the jehovah's witnesses, and some words of encouragement that may put an end to the ridicule and disrespect you seem to get from, well, all sorts of people.. .
i never gave this kind of criticism a second thought: i knew nothing about you, and i figured you were just another fringe group of christianity.
i now feel terrible about this, and i wish to apologize for my (admittedly never spoken) disrespect.

@RaustBD:
Like isaacaustin pointed out, Hell and Armageddon are more or less the same thing. I have heard several times at meetings about how people who were raised in other denominations who ended up being traumatized. Some kids had nightmares and grew into very anxious adults. You won't hear a word about this at the meetings, but the same things happen to many victims of the JW religion. Yes, denouncing hell is good, but I wouldn't say that the Watchtower's concept of Armageddon is much better. The prospect of dying in Armageddon is not any less traumatizing than the prospect of going to hell. On the other hand, at least JWs question the idea of cruel, eternal punishment. But, then again, their replacement is virtually the same thing.
By the way, welcome to JWN!

Could someone please clarify this...?
by Pika_Chu ini've been told over and over that the catholic church was trying to prevent people from reading the bible a long time ago, by keeping it in latin, so people wouldn't understand it.
'cause they hate jehovah, etc, etc.
can someone please clarify this so i can refute it?

I've been told over and over that the Catholic Church was trying to prevent people from reading the Bible a long time ago, by keeping it in Latin, so people wouldn't understand it. 'Cause they hate Jehovah, etc, etc. Can someone please clarify this so I can refute it? I mean, I understand that people knew what was in the Bible back then despite this. There are numerous writings and works of art that depict biblical concepts from time periods wherin the church still controlled a lot of things. And some of these were written in Latin too. People probably knew Latin back then, and the Pope was supposed to have the Holy Spirit to understand this stuff and pass it down through the ranks, as if he got the info from God himself anyway (irony, anyone?). And has anyone else noticed how nice the Watchtowers have been when they talk about Martin Luther? He's praised for wanting to translate the Bible into German(?), yet he also invented, like, a whole branch of "Bablyon the Great," so that wouldn't make since. And the Church is evil for not wanting him to translate or something. Like, that would be tantamount to independent thinking or something... But how do I explain this to a fanatical JW? Should I even try? Would they see the irony? Would they understand maybe the Church could have had a good reason for this, and if not, that the WT is guilty of almost the same thing, not letting us interpret the Bible for ourselves (not languages, of course, but INTERPRETATIONS, none the less)?!

Yep. I've heard people say that their JW friends and relatives would rather they become ATHEISTS instead of finding another religion. In other words, more important that we believe int the WTS than God.

FDS says - "No need to check our work. Besides, it will only make God angry."
by Crisis of Conscience inthough i no longer believe the fds is indeed appointed by god, i guess because of what has been taught to me all these years through the wtbts, i still make an effort to try and look at both sides.
and then i come across this number below, which is how i arrived at my title for this thread.
***w81 2/15 p.19 do we need help to understand the bible?***.

surely Jehovah is not pleased if we receive that food as though it might contain something harmful. We should have confidence in the channel God is using.
Wow. They have to TELL you what attitude you should have regarding information FROM THEMSELVES. Talk about covering their asses with THOUGHT CONTROL!

I'm Starting To Understand Atheist and Evolution
by Philadelphia Ponos infor many years i was sincerely perplexed when someone told me they believed in the evolution theory or were an atheist.
i never understood how someone could ignore all the evidence for intelligent design and overlook all the holes in the evolution theory.
for example, the human biology clock is synced with the rotation of the earth, the earth is the perfect distance away from the sun to sustain life, the earth has an ozone layer to protect us from the sun's radiation, the earth naturally produces fruits and vegetables to be used for food, our bodies produce enzymes to break down the fruits and vegetables so it can nourish us, the earth produces water and oxygen, etc.

@Nomad Soul: Pika Chu, I'll debate you. I'll play the role of the creationist.
Well, that would be fun. Do you seriously want to do it?
